With the first episode of the second season having come out on CR, I had noticed that Shi Sui had the same colour eyes as Loulan (the first season put a lot of emphasis on Loulan's eyes, which at the time I thought was odd). Now it makes sense.
It always feels weird when people act like eye color is super obvious. I couldn't tell you what color Rou Ran's/Loulan's eyes were, or Shi Sui. Hell, I couldn't even tell you what color Maomao's eyes were without double-checking. I could at least tell you Jinshi's eye color, but only because they match his hair (purple).

Anyway, hints based on eye color might as well not exist, for me. (For the anime, not the manga, obviously.) Hair color: yes. Eye color: no.

Though in the case of Loulan in the first episode of the anime, they had the lighting such that it changed the color of her hair (yellow lighting plus shadows), so that didn't trigger notions of similarity either. And all of her ladies-in-waiting (the presumed stand-ins) have brown hair, which also doesn't match Shi Sui's.

Poor Shi Sui, I don't think she wants to be part of any of this at all, she just wants to be friends with Mao Mao and become an entomologist in an age where women can't do anything for themselves :meguuusad:

I had to double check but didnt we already knew that? That Rou Ran disguised herself as a maid so she could go around in the Court?
this is a case of tropes at work.

princess has a dozen of identical maids? yeah its obvious shes swapping places to come and go as she pleases. the story unintentionally revealed the twist because its fairly common in fantasy stories

I've long since lost the plot thread. I just keep opening chapters when a new one comes along and hope I can suddenly remember and understand what is going on. If you're not embedded into a discussion culture about the story, this spoon fed dose of subtle mysteries just becomes kinda meaningless. Don't bother replying to this explaining things, I am doing an experiment.
I sorta agree. This arc would greatly benefit if they had published it in like 2 long chapters instead of 10+(?) very short ones. This would make it easier to keep all the relationships and the little mysteries in mind while reading.

The entirety of this arc took a whole LN volume and will probably take half of the S2 anime runtime. It's a very major arc.

I think the issue with Apothecary Diaries is that there's so much 'mainline' media (anime + 2 mangas) that all slowly starting to converge around the same area in the story that it's hard to keep your mental bookmark in the right place in relation to all of them. If you dabble in the LN as well then there's another bookmark to keep track of.

Still, I do agree that at times the threads of intrigue get too tangled. Feels like I need a chronological flowchart with dynamic relationship mapping at times.
