@RubyG8396 : It seems to be China. I think China was mentioned a few times, though at first I thought it was just some generic fantasy world roughly based on China... Not that I suppose it makes much difference in that case since it is all fictional anyway.

Secondly, by that logic seinens have a dark and gritty violent tone, while shounens have a more lighthearted and emotional violence. The combat / violence aspect is barely there at the moment. And frankly there is more focus on potential romance than there is on rivalry or fighting. If you're suggesting that it can't be josei because the focus is mostly on mystery, I'm guessing you're not that familiar with mystery books... Maybe you should look up Agatha Christie some time. Last I checked, mystery stuff appeals more to girls than to guys.

Anyway... I don't really recall if the other person was trying to insult me or whatever. It isn't important... as long as they don't start just making shit up on the spot.

@SotiCoto I mean mystery specifically in the Japanese context. Most shoujos are more like Twilight. Since this isn't based on girly romance or friendship, I don't think its a shoujo. This is coming from someone who has spent most of her manga weeb duration reading mostly shoujos. I'm admitting that it has shoujo elements but...This wasn't published in a shoujo publication for SOME reason. Maybe the original story was more seinen-like or something. I don't know. The overall plot and story doesn't scream this is for 10-15 year old girls.

Take the protagonist for example. She isn't bumbling and nervous and blushing at everything. When shoujo protagonists exceed that they are borderline Josei characters. I would say it's more Josei like than shoujo. Either way, I agree that this is strange. It has the nitty gritty undertones somewhat but it isn't quite a nitty gritty manga. But, as I said, it may have been more nitty and gritty in the novel.

@RubyG8396 : Well, I said from the start that this was probably josei. It isn't primarily about romance, no, but the main characters definitely suggest josei far more than anything male-targeted.

Wait if the ML is a eunuch does that mean that he doesn't have umm... you know. Wouldn't that technically make him impotent in the first place?

Is this worth reading from a romance perspective? I hear mixed things about it and it kinda seems interesting, but I wanna know if the romance actually develop or is it just relegated to hints and teases?

@Short_Circut as of now, the romance hasn't really developed and it's more of the ML suffering. (lol) There are some really nice scenes between them, but it's not really developing at a fast pace, if any. Give it a read though! It's a really good story even though the romance hasnt really developed :)

@clover7
the male lead actually isn't a eunach, he just drinks a certain liquid to appear less masculine. the drink will eventually make him impotent if he drinks it for too long.
(since appearing more and more masculine would mean more testosterone, which eunachs don't have... that thing)

@lemonadeandsalt ah I see, thanks! I'll probably wait until later and see if the situation changes before starting then, I'm really picky with my manga when it comes to stuff like that :p

it's an award winning for a reason. but the plot of MC origin is just tooooo complicated, as expected from historical story where the emperor have too much concubine 😩

There's a reason why this won an award.

10/10 would read again if bored or if I feel like it.

I’m not sure it can be classified like this. This is definitely like Sherlock Holmes or Agatha Christie, I would classified it as a mystery with an historical setting, asian political background and a hint of horror, humor and romance. It’s for all public who is not totally brainless to my opinion. Very high quality story, plot sub plots, characters, drawing, story telling etc. No wonder it won an award.

It's less Sherlock Holmes and more Chinese Cadfael, which I didn't know I'd be so fucking down with, yo.
