I think it's safe for him to do a self-portrait so long as it isn't realistically colored (as was hinted at during the time he was trying to heal Fei of his injuries.

That latter part though, I think if it were possible, it might consume a lot more magic power than what he normally spends on materializing since it's practically sealing something (or someone) into a drawing.
