Is he seriously complaining about the amount his victims had after stealing it? And not even that, even complaining that they were in such dire straits they had to desperately chase him for what he considers a pittance?

Yeah, this guy is unredeemable scum, probably kicks puppies for a hobby.

ps: and I remembered that this was a BL manga, but seeing the next character - foreshadowed as the "angel" - be a guy, just drives that home squarely. In case the large time since last chapter had allowed ppl to forget~ :dogkek:

Ah, slaves. Damn I thought I stopped reading most series that involves that. I don't hate it, but like most school manga if the use of school/slavery isn't something compelling enough for me to consider, I tend to drop... I won't do it here yet though, we will see with the boy.

EH? SLAVE ARE COMMON THESE DAYS? I'M A SLAVE BTW

Felt that like I feel my age when waking up in the morning

I won't make it rotten for you, ignorance is bliss. Just a little tip: avoid the comments for some of the earlier chapters :worry:
But if you worry it is spoilers, then no, it's not spoilers. Just stuff from prior chaps. But also means spoiler tags won't protect you if your curiosity does decide to be a cat~

just found out about this and binged read this in an instant!!! it's soo good, it's sometimes fluffy while also can be thrilling!

also, when will Laocules' slave collar removed? i feel like the chapter about hostage rescue could've been also when MC's removing Lao's collar, so it's a bit disappointing lol

It's been so long, I almost forgot about this manga and its distorted/naive take on slavery. This world's slavery is presented as a beneficial system for "rich people [to] help the poor" -- as described by MC's rich/noble friend.

Is there a Japanese metaphor or idiom about "a painting of mochi?"

Gemini:

Yes, there is a well-known Japanese idiom about "a painting of mochi." It is:
絵に描いた餅 (e ni kaita mochi)
This idiom literally translates to "mochi drawn in a picture."
Its meaning is that something is useless, impractical, or will not yield any real benefit, much like a picture of mochi, which you cannot actually eat to satisfy hunger. It refers to plans, ideas, or possessions that are appealing in concept but have no real-world value or are impossible to realize.
The origin of this idiom is said to come from a story in ancient Chinese history, where a person spoke of "drawing a 餅 (mochi)" on the ground, implying something that could not be used or consumed. This concept was adopted into Japanese as 「絵に描いた餅」.
