they're supposed to add the missing self-preservation to his worldview, not cause him destruction. they should have let the art work continue, but force him to self care by teaching him in a way that he understands, like relating the tasks he needs to do with his interest in art.

That being said, I prefer to read into this chapter, as -- they're trolling Argent, because they know Argent just wants the MC for his summoning, not for his art. So they came up with some stupid BS blabber to reject him.

Well, if they were not trolling Argent, then the whole conversation is just misleading. Because there's no way it really is just that stupid, right?
I mean, the MC currently IS successful. He's a home owner, practically a village-chief, with people under his command, and a lord as his sponsor / in his debt. He's successful enough, to the point he can wank under a waterfall all his life, and still be considered successful.

It just makes more sense to think that the MC was trolling, rather than actually be that airheaded, tbh...

I don't know if that qualifies as a good or correct parenting decision. You don't need to coddle him, but there should be a parenting option that doesn't involve shitting on everything your child loves?(Chapter 9) Just tell the child that Art is great, respect them for the talent and drive they're putting into it, and also acknowledge, pure Art on it's own doesn't cut it as a Job. The lessons that can be taught are pretty simple. There are Jobs where Art is a respected skill set.

MC is not trolling Argent, he honestly loves art. Just look back at all the times, he finds an artistic muse and just focuses on them. Also See: "Food for the heart" (Ch 15 Pg 32), he's stating that unlike the modern Japanese world in which he used to inhabit, he's trying to find the soul of existing. A wish fulfillment manga, where the wish is to be satisfied. (Personally, I want Space Communism, but we can't always get what we want)

To Argent, the MC's version of success is so bizarre, he might as well be an Alien. MC is working on that tip of the pyramid for Maslow's hierarchy of needs.

That being the case, his being so honest, is also a veiled threat to Argent. Argent suspects that MC is incredibly powerful, Summoning the Red Dragon, at a minimum. That sets a baseline for what sort of retribution MC could wreck on Argent. Even before it's known that he's gotten stronger.

So, I don’t know if it’s just me misinterpreting the situation like a dumb dumb boy, but I still can’t help but feel like Argent really isn’t actually all that evil? Like, just from the way he’s been talking, it feels more like he’s saying stuff someone else has told him to say or something. Yeah, the story has been a bit ambiguous on this point. There are mentions of him recently leaving Jr. High, so I'm leaning towards the younger end of HS age. So 15-16, in my head canon at least. He's young enough to be charmed/aroused by Cloa, but not to the point where it's a thing that he's constantly thinking about. Maybe it's listed in the LN.

I honestly wouldn't be surprised if Tougo actually had a crash course on charm spell and was using it with that puppy eyes.

On the side note, I don't believe that he's trolling at all. Remember that he is actually kinda proposed to Cloa-san to be his model, or when he was fixated on his bodyguard? We were joking that he's an airhead with nothing in his mind but painting, but as story progresses, that observation always get reinforced.

Do you really believe he couldn't live happily with nothing but painting, and maybe friends, in his life? If that is a trolling, it's a truth containing trolling.
