It is good that she got skinny. It is also good that others reacted so positively. I don't know if Japan had a body positivity equivalent, but a lot needs to be done to reverse that movement's effects. It's good to be accepting of a flaw if it is immutable. Burn victims and amputees should be treated with respect as fellow hoomans. But it is bad to not just tolerate, but glorify something as dangerous as fatness. It is another vector through which gramscians have subverted our institutions, and we must restore them. Glorifying the inverse is a step towards restoration. It is not an achievement to become fat. It is an achievement to become skinny. Because of that, the glory of skinniness must be made greater so that people are more willing to work towards it.
ough.... average opinion of someone with the name "MensCultureUnion" lmao. There's a difference between glorifying health and glorifying skinniness. Also I'm reading Gramsci's wikipedia article because I've never heard of the man but he sounds based as hell?????? But what else can I expect from a manga forum :3

I knew this was coming from the covers, but honestly I thought the interactions between Omori, Akira and his sister were pretty sweet. Having been the chef to a partner who wished to gain muscle and one who wished to lose weight, this chapter kinda hit me like a truck.

I literally just made an account to say this:

1) Wanting representation of different body types as MAIN protagonists isnt "fat fetishisation". Its literally a normal body type that exists, it is something that shouldnt be excluded from media because of your own comfort. This logic is literally akin to right wingers calling gay people pedophiles because they want proper sex education and media representation for kids.

2) Losing weight doesnt inherently make you "better". This gymbro eating disorder mindset is ruining your relationship with food.

3) Yes, the character only gained weight due to mental health issues (stress eating), so itd be normal for her to aim to lose weight once her mental healtg recovered. However the issue was the phrasing of it in series seemed like it was her becoming more loveable because she lost weight. No, she was loveable before. She didnt need to lose weight for the author to write her as being more loveable.

In the end its just another "fat girl turned skinny and is suddenly loved by people" story thats pushed as a modern day 'bsauty and the beast'. This is why "My mad fat diary" is on top because it doesnt pull this hypocritical feel good circle jerk storyline.

4) you could have the character become skinny, that wasnt the issue. As i said before, the issue was how they handled it.

If it had just been them eating on the roof and she had only gone through that daily humiliation in the classroom it would have been much better but the dramatic plot twists were weird
Stopping to think about the couple and forgetting for a moment the whole backstory it was a weak couple too

There's nothing wrong with what happened here, but its really abrupt and that's annoying. Wanting to become healthier and feel better about yourself isn't a bad thing, but it's "bam she's hot now and now she gets a kiss," when one of the fun things about the manga was how she was fat. Her realizing that the guy holding her was some skinny dude and just... falling on him fuckin' ruled so much

I suppose its a bit too much to want the series to slowly change the way she's drawn, but this sort of poof, pretty now is always frustrating, and it being in this sort of manga where her weight wasn't a problem for good people before and is actually one of the reasons the plot happened does feel off. That she was fat because of stress eating junk meant that this plot element was seeded a long time ago, but it never felt like something that needed to be resolved, but rather something that would resolve itself over time.

I mean, when you center your whole manga around “non-conventionally attractive girl who still deserves love and basic human dignity” and then go “oh but wait she’s fixed now! Now everyone likes her much more! See her boyfriend finally gave her a kiss!” You’re gonna get some shit.
well there's still "Flowers for an ugly girl" but i don't think she's meant to be /that/ chubby and more so 'plain' compared to how handsome and pretty the main love interest/'rival' is

But i think there was one with that amnesiac fat girl with a super positive attitude when she woke up

I hear in Japan that 'set meals'/home cooked meals equivalent at like a local restaurant is healthy and fairly affordable and other than binge eating or some kinda disorder like that, ppl usually have to go outta their way to gain weight and such so i imagine it's more looked down on to be fatter even at a younger age (tho i do also half expect to be a 'comedy' that is technically kinda fucked up if you think about it for too long of some 'pretty girl' shaving her head and gaining a ton of weight for men to leave her alone or so but that's a whole nother convo)

Agree with all the comments disliking this portrayal of weight loss.

It is totally okay for her to lose weight given we know she was only stress eating before. I would say it's even expected for such a development to happen.

But the framing just kinda undermines her character and journey. What do you mean become more loveable to someone else? She was perfectly loveable before. It was 100% fine for them to portray it as her wanting to lose weight because she feels less stressed and would like to look a different way for herself, to feel more comfortable in her own body. But no, they make it all about her feeling validated by society's beauty standards as well as her boyfriend, which is a real punch in the gut.

This is a really, REALLY annoying trope in shoujo manga which I feel also infiltrated this manga, where a lot of the girl's worth is put on the validation of men/others instead of their own self-love. Bleh.

And sure, it's not like it's a bad ending or I hate what became of her, I just really wish the message had been more positive.

Even just their genetics make them a super slim people. It wasn't that rare to see people my height-ish in Japan (6'2) but I'd be about twice their width. Everyone's a bean pole. You could immediately tell the people who had actual disorders because they'd be American sized compared to the average.

I wish they would've left her healthy chunky. Like not as big as she was, but not completely slim either. Although I guess in Japan you have to be fairly unhealthy to get that big (disorders aside.)
Given how the 'delinquent' was also strong i'd be all for her also gaining muscles too tho i imagine it's hard to portray a muscular female teenager or so/not sure if there'd be that much ref out there for the arists

Knew it was coming but I still hate it. Pretty cringe she didn’t get her first kiss until AFTER she became conventionally attractive. Honestly if this wasn’t basically over I’d have dropped it this chapter.
That's not the point bruh and you missed that by far, she wasn't happy the way she was, she just endure it, cuz she lacks of motivation, Asura give her the confidence, he is part of her progress, he start all since he makes more nutritive and clean meals and not just junk food

IDK about you guys glorifying being fat but theres a difference between being chubby and being obese and i can name over 10 different dangers of being obese, i know we like to see the good in people but the guys above need a reality check on the dangers of being fat

That aside this chapter made me giggle like a schoolgirl AHHHH theyre so cute together~ <3
Sad that its ending soon tho ;(

Uh the fat fetishists are about to throw a fit 🤣🤣🤣🤣
As chubby chaser you better believe i am punching air!

Ehhhhhh it could’ve been worse, I wish she lost the weight for health reasons or something rather than “I want to be more lovable”. Also isn’t that a lot of weight to lose in only a month?
Isn’t Japanese summer vacation 2 months?
Liposuction and ozempic the secret diet regimen she didn't told us about!

I was assuming we got at least a 6 month skip

As a formerly overweight person that became moderately fit (not even a gymbro, just do calisthenics and lift some small dumbbells) I can say it's much more comfortable being fit, pains you grew accustomed to disappear, walking for longer time and farther makes daily life easier and despite what people seem to think not all fit people is obsessed in counting calories, after all exercise is all about USING those calories instead of letting them accumulate, you can totally eat to your fill and be healthy, probably even eat more than before
