The way I look at it, Ebony isn't a pawn to him at all. As of yet he isn't making her do anything, him giving her the mansion would just be the most effective way to humiliate the guy who derided them both. Moreover, giving her such a coveted piece of property would reveal that she isn't some mere pity pet of his, but rather that she was deemed valuable enough to dote on with such a gift.

@vipsmell - Oh yes, to some extent. But not as blatant. Socialising is a must for nobles so they are obligated to have those kind of interactions with others much more often than us who have more freedom on choosing who we want to hang out with or talk to. You also do not need to fear about social status that much here so you can call people out when they act like that, and people will have a more objective view on sharing opinions. Either way, no matter the time period, having people speak like that and getting away with it is in poor taste.
