In some Japanese universities, there are "insider" and "outsider" undergrads. The "insider" ones are those who come from feeder or affiliated high schools and given the chance to apply directly. The "outsiders" are those who take the general national exam then apply to their university of choice. Touma and Barato seem to be "insiders", especially given their training in high school. Chinatsu came from Honshu, so she's definitely an "outsider". Entrance exam results and rankings are given separately for insiders and outsiders because, while the actual exams are exactly the same, they are administered through different systems. Chinatsu seems to be the top scorer among outsiders but Barato is the top scorer overall. She just didn't realize it because she was on a different ranking table.

really? did Chinatsu mention about top scorer somewhere in the earlier chapter?
because I read the raw, and my understanding is a bit different

I mean, if she knows that she is also top scorer (via different route), it doesn't make sense that she became that angry.
sure it can be angry caused by rivalry, but then it would make more sense if she said something along the line "so you're also the top scorer?" and not "so you're lying"

The reason why she's angry is easier to understand. She bragged to the two of them that she was the top scorer and Barato agreed. Well, turns out Barato was the real top scorer, so he was lying when he agreed with her.

so then she is not a top scorer, she just thought that she is (I believe the original also something like this)
however, the first conversation made it looks like she knew she was the one.
if she just blatantly lied and tried to brag, I'd imagine she will be "embarrassed" angry when she gets caught, not "angry" angry,
that's why I said this doesn't feel right

but that's just me

No, the point is that she WAS the top scorer - among the outsiders. She didn't know that the insider Barato scored higher because his scores aren't made public like hers. She was expecting the university to acknowledge her during the entrance ceremony because she was the top scorer (this is common in Japan - top scorers are also often called up to provide a speech) but that didn't happen, so she bragged to Barato directly.

There's additional context here in that in Hokkaido agricultural and veterinarian universities insiders tend to score lower overall than outsiders. This is because outsiders are filtered through the supercompetitive national exam system while many insiders get in through a quota system. Children of farmers and students from agricultural and technical high schools are given special preference to get into university because they're expected to continue the family business or take up a trade. This dynamic is shown (in exaggerated fashion) in the manga Gin no Saji (by Arakawa Hiromu of Full Metal Alchemist fame) where the main character who got in through regular exam is consistently the entire university's star student. Compared to him, all the farmer kids and insiders are total idiots when it came to academic pursuits, although they do shine in their specialized fields (kids of dairy farmers are great at husbandry, for example). So Chinatsu was being a bit of a prejudiced bitch (because she thought the insider kids couldn't possibly be better than her academically), but she wasn't lying.
