What can Mangadex do hosting Light Novels Baka Tsuki doesn't already do, especially if it's to fight piracy. . . .?
This is what I was asking you about, how is fighting piracy related to Mangadex

Well I just got lost in all the acronyms so Imma leave a list here for those currently confused.

MD = MangaDex
BT = BakaTsuki
NU = NovelUpdates
TL = translate
MTL = manga translate

As for my opinion, isn't MD pro-scanlator rather than anti-piracy? MD has a different ideology than BT so MD wouldn't really copy BT if MD ever wants to step into the LN/WN world.

Close, MTL is Machine Translation and TL can either mean Translator or Translate or whatever noun/verb it can be

I'm actually curious what aggregrator sites would do when mangadex goes the LN way too...

On a separate point, are there any novel aggregators that are decent to use? (ie not ad infested, etc)

Aside from baka-tsuki, I suppose.

The idea of anti-sniping policies is hilarious. What are they going to do, hire a bitcoin assassin?

If i have to use an aggregator I use boxnovel it has adds but its not intrusive. On most cases I just use the TLs website.

Edit: I also use wuxiaworld for my chinese fix.

No, my point is I thought Baka Tsuki is already serving a similar purpose as a potential Light Novel Mangadex.
The fact that they're similar is the point, I thought Baka Tsuki is an existing site that essentially
already does what a Light Novel based Mangadex would potentially do.

??????

I put piracy in because Zephy posted this on the 1st page of comments in this thread?

The idea is intriguing to me, to be honest. We have several ideas that we'd like to see pan out (including @Ixlone's pretty amazing drama CD project) after the release of v4 of MD, which the devs are hard at work on in the background whenever they have the spare time.

To be honest, in continuing our overarching mission of stamping out profitable piracy, I wouldn't have a problem with disrupting group monopolies over content. But that's a story for another day and I suspect staff would have to spend quite some time crafting rules that wouldn't piss *everybody* off.

Isn't. . . . that Zephy very clearly stating the goal is stamping out profitable piracy aka discouraging paid piracy? Did... I misread that one as not an objective? It seemed pretty clear to me.

Regardless, Baka Tsuki still pretty much does what Mangadex does, except for Light Novels and is much more strict on Licensing, is it worth it to sink time into programming Light Novel Mangadex when an existing site already does most of these services for you?

Pretty sure when Zeph said "profitable piracy" he was talking about keeping the content paywalled, not about shutting down licensed works or working against piracy in general. I don't know why you would assume our stance on light novel piracy would suddenly be a complete 180 from our stance on manga piracy, licensed works or otherwise.

i think you're mistaken. Baka tsuki isn't a LN aggregator, it's more like a community open wikipedia type thing, where anyone can contribute to existing projects and collaborate. a noveldex would probably be more like uploading all the fantled novels in existence. Also allowing people to upload directly, instead of having to make a wordpress/whatever. Not really similar.

@holo I'm wondering if you would be willing to collaborate with Tony from NU for this new venture? I'm sure he would agree in helping, I love NU and Mangadex and a collaboration between the two would be amazing

Can..... you get paid for piracy besides pay walling chapters, I thought paid piracy and Pay walling chapters meant the same thing?
Huh, I never thought of this before. This is getting weird, I should go.

Hmmm, I didn't think of that. Usually, Light novel translated texts have no credits pages, so I didn't think how different the wiki thing and no credits page would be. I guess Baka Tsuki not quite an aggregator then. I don't know about collecting dead group's Translated text, how do you get permission to use text from a dead Light Novel group? Ask dead people? What if the the group comes back to life, then what. Mangadex is more like a passive aggregator anyways, where groups come to upload stuff, so a Light novel version would be similar to Baka-Tsuki in that respect methinks. Yeah that credit part tripped me up, that is weird quirk of the wiki nature of Baka Tsuki.

(No credits page example.)

The standard policy would be that dead groups' content is free game, since dead groups don't complain. Same applies for defunct official publishers.

I mean... is it really that bad if NovelDex is just a rip off of Baka-Tsuki? Competitions exist all the time so being a copycat doesn't serve large consequences.
