Don't count out the mc. He was surprised at the start, but a lot of his internal dialogue (which the manga doesn't have) proves his intelligence quite often.

When I was reading the novel, the biggest complaints were that he's so mellow for a being so powerful. But it's mostly because he just doesn't care as long as he's left alone. This isn't his world. And all he cares about protecting are the few people who live with him. He's more than capable of showing his rage, though. And that rage could easily wipe all life from the continent.
