I went back to read chapter 1, and then I realized that the manga has basically dropped an entire plot point.

I haven't seen this mentioned ever again.

Obaa-san had attempted to get him free of his adoptive family's control back then but ran out of time. She's set up much of what's happening in this series to make up for her failure and get him into her family by other means.
