Just a thought but if demons don't have the concept of friendship in their society, they wouldn't have the concept of love either. They have functionally similar and analogous concepts but not those precise things.
So Amalie would be confused since she's a demon with no concept of love outside of shoujo manga. But their society does have the concept of desire, greed and hunger so that's the only way she can express how she wants him.
