well, pretty much exactly what i thought had happened back when he first told ameri that her mother had "left this world" due to an illness. i sure do wonder though if there will be a reunion at some point in the story or not.

The door would always be open, and the Key would call the human door.
Or is it more that the door locked after sending Merize back, and Iruma was able to reopen it?

These have been really great chapters. But the side effect of all of this is that it makes Sullivan and Iruma's situation more comical.
Sullivan has been throwing his boy into danger knowing full well that a drop of blood could turn into a massacre. Meanwhile Iruma has probably been in the underworld for about as long maybe even a little longer than merize. He's been fighting for his life and is somehow doing better than the woman who's been leading a relatively sedentary life for the time she's been there.
