For Beelzebub's sake, get out of the way of the camera so I can see the whole chessboard? Please?
So far as I can tell, assuming there are no pieces in the obscured portion of the board, and it's Black to move as dialogue suggests, the position is roughly equal, but extremely dynamic. Right now, Kalego might be pondering if he should take the piece on a5 with the rook or with the knight. The knight is currently under attack, so it would seem like the obvious choice, but Qa4+ is such a nasty blow to the Black position that taking with the rook (thereby preventing the queen from showing up on a4, lest it be taken) might be the better choice in practical terms.
It's not at all common for a chess position shown in manga to not just be legal, but interesting, which is why I wish I could see the whole board... Because if the portion of the board that's being obscured contains extra white pawns or even just a rook on a1, Kalego is completely boned unless his remaining knight and bishop are out there causing unexpected tactical mayhem in White's territory.
There's still one thing the author seems to have overlooked, at minimum, though. Where are all the captured pieces? Kalego should have captured at least some of White's pieces at some point, even if it's just the pawns on the kingside. Why did Mephisto scoop up all of the captured pieces for himself? Who does that?
