The word can be used self deprecatingly. It's not necessarily as terrible as it sounds, but impossible to know until the next part.

As someone who understands quite a bit kanji, that word “没落”(downfall) does usually have a rather negative meaning. And frankly when I see that word in kanji, the first thing came into my head is something along the lines of “the downfall of a family“, so … yeah, same here, I’ve got a bad feeling about what the next part will bring.

But knowing the author, I don’t think we’ll need to worry about it being too depressing as of now. Give it one chapter at most, and it would likely be wholesome again, no problem.
