A lot of people talking about sympathy and redemption or not needing them because backstory, but what if the flashback was not to make us sympathetic to this character but to give context to what they did to make them an actual character rather than a two dimensional villain who is evil because evil?

I don't like her but i understand her reasoning. Something i couldn't say about like 90% antagonists in Manga nowadays.

The backstory is technically believable, but ultimately idiotic. She could have gotten just as many corpses by hunting criminals that the public at large wouldn't mind being killed, like fucking BANDITS, and gotten payed by doing so to fund her research.

There was zero need to massacre a village and whatever else she did. The fact that she did so anyway reveals that she has no consideration to spare on the lives of other people, which hints she was some kind of sociopath.
