That line, and the black mist on the fruit as he pulled it out, gives me ominous vibes - like he thinks he will live a very long life, but ends up drastically shortening it by poisoning himself with his own magic.

I'm thinking the opposite, perhaps his stasis magic will affect his body and make him immortal.

My impression was the magic (preservation) clinging to the fruit might be more persistent than he thought.
Like it going through his digestive system and refusing to brake down.

March could actually would be the proper term for that, since it's a border/frontier territory. It's also where we get the terms marquess and margrave.
