I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that "seeing souls/spirits" and "mana sickness hallucinations" are actually the same thing, and that people just aren't usually able to see spirits so when they temporarily boost their mana through external means, before they're knocked unconscious they're briefly elevated to being able to perceive spirits. Kunon's method just employs a more directed approach that's able to perceive them without needing to take in that much mana.

"Woah, look at the BLACK sun, and WHITE grass, and PURPLE sky, and BLUE trees"
"I don't LOOK LIKE THE TYPE to grow a beard"

"my mum LOOKS LIKE A HERO"

How does he know what any of these things are, or look like? The black could be yellow to him. How does he know, or imagine, a hero should look like? It's like the author didn't take two seconds to think how a blind person would actually think and react to seeing things for the first time - it really took some of the bite out of this moment that this character was working towards. :pout:

man, the last panel seem like a problem is incoming to me.

the one "tsk" one like the usual " i hate MC for some reason" type,
the guy talking seem like last boss or guy with tons of secrets,
the saint look like a tired office lady

What an interesting chapter, it's practically meant to hook you in but it's chapter 13? Normally it'd be much earlier, but I appreciate the time it spent setting up the characters and the world before introducing this weird alternate world. If it's actually just all a hallucination that'll be crazy too, but I think mana sickness or whatever is probably giving people a glimpse into this world and it's just overwhelming them.

I'm making up stuff now but I recently just rewatched bakemonogatari. Crab can be read as God too right? Is our mc followed around by some sort of god? Is that how he sees it? Nevertheless

Thanks for the TL!

Read quarzonian's comment

If the existing translation is bad, you could read the original here and use something to translate it. (Like DeepL, or even Chrome's built in auto-translate)

That's also what I do since I got irritated at reading several particularly bad translations.
:questionblob:
What his reply got anything to do with what I said? I had no complaints about the translation, or reading the WN/LN; I was talking about how the character is clearly talking about the visuals of things, that he should have no experience in. How does he know that the sun is black, when he has never seen black or yellow?... because, y'know... HE'S BLIND! IT'S HIS FIRST TIME SEEING ANYTHING!!

They tagged the wrong person, it's the one above that one.
Kunon already can 'see' nearby thing before. He can read and look at paintings, etc.

I wonder, can he create a hand in the same way that he created the eyeball, in order to interact with the things only he can see?

His father is occult leader, the collector of tailed beast!
And back off, you unnecessary love rival! Kunon doesn't need another quill head!

The extreme light/dark coding makes me wonder. Is it maybe part of heritage? Like descending from some holy/unholy race? Or is it a reflection of their nature. The symbolic nature is pretty clear on the other hand, it's interesting that it can manifest as creature parts but also inanimate objects and concepts.

He has color perception already and matched the names of colors to their appearance in one of the earlier chapters, he can also read books and look at the pictures in them so I assume he's seen a few depictions of heroes. As for beards I guess he's seen drawings of people with beards? since he couldn't see facial features well until now

Not really much of a point to making the eyes then, if he was basically already seeing everything already. I had taken note that this chapter (or the one just prior) had mentioned that he had a way to perceive colours and had been doing so, I just brought that up to make my point more crystal clear - that he seems to be acting in a way that suggests he had already seen all these things (particularly faces, and being able to judge people by them and such), despite supposedly being completely blind.

To me it just seems like the author didn't think much about what they were writing when they wrote the dialogue here.

I'm surprised I didn't see that when I was reading/quoting the other post.

So he has the hallucinations without the peyote... check.... :p

Kunon has been blind since he was a child right? Then how does he know the correct colors of stuff? Especially when he said purple sky.

Someone needs to read the story from the beginning again.

Or this very comment section.
This has been asked and answered.

Edit: I will add that this chapter is pretty well-written.
Kunon is not saying that the colors are wrong. He's saying that it doesn't match the feeling he had from picture books, which he could read using a different form of color perception. And he doesn't know if the problem is his understanding of the books, the technique he's using to see... or the world itself.
