I’m a little worried about the focus on that train in the memory, especially when it ominously mentioned what he saw at the end, but I’m hoping that’s just me being paranoid and making connections where there aren’t any.

In the original Japanese, it wasn't an "I understand" in the sense that she understands why he didn't take her hand, but more like a "I got it." with the nuance of "Fine, if that's how it's going to be."
And the "Just as I thought, you are not going to take my hand" is also kind of like, "I knew you weren't going to take my hand."
Pretty much my guess as to what she was able to understand from this is:

• If he takes her hand and dances with her, then the missing piece inside of him isn't necesarilly from seeing himself as someone who doesn't deserve happiness or to be part of the group. It would show that he's willing to, even a little, put himself first and do the dance with Manaka, and that his issue of putting others first might not be too far gone.
• If he doesn't take her hand, then there's a much bigger issue going on as to why he will never put himself first, why he refuses to believe that Manaka could choose him (even if its not in a romantic way). And now she understands that his "kindness" to her and the others is probably a much deeper issue to a worrying degree.

I might be completely wrong here, but this is just what I got from seeing the interaction. It's honestly genuinely concerning at this point for Manaka because it's honestly scary how Kimura literally doesnt even seem to care about his own life, safety, happiness, etc in the slightest. It's as if he thinks he lives just to make sure things go well for others, and that kind of self-destructive behavior from someone you're very close to has to have come from somewhere.
Manaka's expressions, not only when she's talking to Kimura in the beginning, but after their conversation when they're sitting in the ballroom is so telling. Especially because when you look at all the expressions she's made in the series up until this point, it's a huge contrast with what she looks like in this chapter. I don't even know if there's a single word that can describe what she must be feeling based off what happened there.

From how the story is going, the MC guy more likely to ended up with manakas bro than her 😭 takabi is a strong girl who is smart, athletic, and have a bright future in front of her; i could see that she aint need any man anytime soon so she can focus with her career (also she kinda asexual coded), plus the foreshadowing that shes kimuras long lost sibling. + kimura with manaka is a good ship alrd. They grow together as human being, both are kind and thoughtful of others. MC dont really deserve manaka nor have enough chemistry with her anw.

I think it's coming. They've already alluded to Ei being poor which is why he got forced into the engagement and also very unlucky. I don't think his backstory will be a happy one

It's a bit dark but my guess is that Kimura's mother was a losing heroine. She tried to make it work with his dad, but she couldn't move on from the memory of her first love. In the end, it got too painful for both of Kimura's parents to remain together so they decided to split amicably. Kimura's mother wasn't abusive to him but her lingering attachments to her first love made him subconsciously wonder if he has the right to be on this planet. I think Kimura sees Manaka's situation as an opportunity of sorts to prevent anyone from being born in the same situation as him, make the losing heroine win so she won't have to be with someone she's not completely happy with.
