And slavery is used for criminal punishment. That little pickpocket scene was proof of that. Now I'm not saying slavery is a good thing, but considering the morality of this medieval world, we can't force our own ideals and whatnot on this institution.

Lets make this clear, we have prisons and jails because we have abundance, if we didn't, we would just kill people who commit a crime that has a clear path to harm.
Slave labor/forced labor is the only way you can justify keeping prisoners alive.

This is how the world works, weather you like it believe it or not.

Meh, the whole point about criminal slave is undermined by the fact that people can just sell their children into slavery, meaning innocent children are getting the same treatment as hardened criminals.

And you CAN'T defend that, even IRL never had dumb ideas like that put into practice.

Im less bothered about the slavery. (It does fit in with a medieval~ish society unfortunatly)

But more that the mc spouts some bs about 'ooh It's engrained and It's going to be chaos to free them', like that's not a fucking excuse to not want to end slavery. Especially the economic and political system that forces parents to sell their children. But he just shakes it off and leaves.

Now, if he instead showed sympathy while realising that It's not something that he can do anything about as one person? That i would be fine with, it could have served as a reminder that this is not a nice fantasy world of swords and magic.

Because if legal slaves are criminals, like that pickpocketing brat, and kids sold into slavery, i doubt that they would have many rights. Since they are not considered people as the slave merchant showed.

Lastly, why no debt-slaves? Unless they become criminals by not repaying, i would expect them to make up a large portion of slaves in this kind of system.

What good would stealing money do for her as a slave anyway? Where is she going to spend it, considering she is tied up and under constant guard...or is she supposed to use the pittance to bribe a guard to let her go?

While you are not technically incorrect, it may be more accurate to say we have prisons and jails for delivering weighted punishments for different crimes. This world isn't the wild west where one bad at a guy having a bad day was taken as a go ahead to murder them.

The reason you keep prisoners alive is more than just because we have an abundance. For one, their crime may not be worth their life. In many cities, J-walking and graffiti are both considered crimes. Should we just kill those offenders on the spot? No. Another reason is for cheap labor, this is predominantly also what criminal slaves especially were used for. Last major reason to not kill prisoners is for reformation. While this ties in fairly hard to having an abundance or resources, it can and has been done without them.

Last reason, but it kind of is contradictory, is they were used for military means. For example, talented prisoners (not POWs though) were sometimes sent on suicide missions deep into enemy territory durring world wars. They were usually offered either time removed from their sentencing or offered their freedom on a succesful return.

@alidan It works in the sense that it happens, not in the sense that it benefits the countries that do that.
