I always see this problem where authors create characters older than themselves (mentally or otherwise), but show none of the wisdom of age. If he was maybe in his 30s maybe you could fudge it a bit, but 60? This guy is as dumb and naïve as the rest of those teenagers. He is just a bit more calm and bit more logical. The teen "heroes" are invariably mongrel retards most of the time. It is sort of like how do you write a smart character if you are not smart yourself? You end up with a caricature of a person. Also who the hell retires at 60 nowadays? And he said he was unemployed for 8 years? So did he retire at 52? If he did well enough for himself to retire in his early 50s, why is he so dumb?
