Mangadex to purge titles for legal reasons

This is smaller than the Jaimini's Box tantrum. This is smaller than the hacked site. This is smaller than MD being down for a year+. This is smaller than the DMCA purge.

Ah, Jaimini's Box, now that was a huge drama clusterfuck.

And for the most part I agree with the rest. In the big picture, losing a handful of titles isn't a huge problem.

What is a huge problem is:

• the attitude NamiComi staff has towards the MD user community
• the hyprocracy of the staff's official communications on the matter
• the complete lack of transparancy regarding the whole affair
• the fact that the non-NamiComi MD staff seem to no longer be in control of their own community
• the fact that they (presumably) caved to UK legal complaints because MD is now a registered business in the UK (when did that happen and why?)
• and perhaps most importantly, the precedent this sets for the future

Can you please stop trying to bullshit us, the copyright holders, and yourselves? 90% or more of the content on this site is pirated content that you have no legal basis to be hosting and displying, and you know it. If you actually followed through on all your talk, you wouldn't have a website.

Banning users for making mass reports is the staff preventing you from cutting off your nose just to spite your face (but it's also rule breaking behavior). You want the content here, they want the content here (staff expressed disappointment on discord). They're just not willing to go to jail for you (literally from staff on discord "The immediate concern is not going to jail").

Considering how an admin called those opposing the takedowns pedophiles, I can't agree that the staff as a whole also want the content here. The problem we have now is that an admin who thinks some of the content here is reprehensible now has just cause to delete it. If this clause in the rules was only to cover their own ass from legal issues then the response should have been much different. Then we could respect that this is an unfortunate situation and not try to "help." But as it stands, no one should be banned for aiding this admin.

As for them not willing to go to jail for us, that's a poor excuse. They know that they are building a pirate site so they should have been setting things up to be as immune to DMCA and other takedowns as possible since otherwise they risk the entire site being nuked overnight. Having to follow takedown requests due to the content rather than only copyright shows that this site is even more vulnerable than we thought.

Only explanations I can think of would be that at the beginning of the story she's still in her last year of high school (she does seem to mature and age throughout the chapters), the nightmares the father has are of her when she's younger, the coworker's "wall of art" could reasonably have loli in it, or it's just a mis-tagged entry (of which there are many).

You could always report it with "Information to Correct" and provide proof it's a mis-tag.

This is really the only actual problem in my eyes. The rest of the bullet points are built on user presumptions spawned from that lack of transparency. I can reason away the initial lack of transparency as being due to sheer urgency, but it's a poor decision to try and provide all the requested transparency at once in one big "Wall O' Text." It just takes too long. Though, I think they are too understaffed to provide frequent updates, as well. Bit of a Catch-22.

They should be prioritizing transparency for the most recent removals and then get to the DMCA purge transparency as time allows.

I don't feel owed any transparency outside what titles/chapters were removed (transparency page includes who requested the removal).

@darkdepths I'll respond to you after a while. I don't wanna double post, but there are some explanations (and clarifications on my part) for your concerns.

You're conflating two different arguments.

No one suggests that playing GTA makes you a murderer. The difference is that violent games do not center on sexualizing children. That's an unfair comparison.

The issue at hand isn't "it's just pixels, so jail forever.” The issue is that sexual content involving minors, even if fictional, normalizes and feeds attraction to minors. That’s why many countries treat it seriously. It’s not about protecting drawings. it's about protecting real kids and not creating demand for that kind of material.

Also, calling people slurs and writing paragraphs full of extreme examples doesn’t make the argument stronger. It just makes it look emotional.

You can debate the law and harm without pretending it’s the same thing as running people over in a video game.

This is how I've always understood the situation. Their legal team received specific titles that violated the clause. They removed them immediately to avoid legal action. Titles were removed completely because their covers were part of the problem. Comparing it to the DMCA purge is accurate as titles were removed with no notice that time, as well. Only difference is the removal of pages because of the covers.

Users upload chapters of their own volition. Staff are free to work independently with user groups. That may be why you see staff upload chapters to MD. Telling staff that they can't scanlate anymore just because they volunteered to moderate comment sections would be stupid.

Good that you're here, what happened to the English chapters for Kumika no Mikaku? Your group scanlated and uploaded those chapters. Some folks were asking about it a page or two ago.

to be fair, a lot of her past comments, especially controversial ones, were on NamiComi titles

coupled with the fact that the staff members are more active on Discord than on the forums could mean that a lot of this behavior was never seen by them

now, she is active on the Discord server (presumably), but I have no idea what kind of stuff she posts there nor her behavior, so eh
