Ads are not a problem as long as I don't have to fear every click I do on my phone.

I like the idea of optional ads. Many sites known for being ad-free has the option for users who wanna opt in to support.

As others have said, perhaps a way to convert donations into crypto since most of us are clueless on the usage of crypto.

I think MD could just implement all 4 choices slowly. There’s really no reason to limiting the number of ways to help.

Its been a fun ride and boi the drama never ends. I hope that somehow ya'll get affiliates, tho it's unrealistic but I want that to happen.

I second what @Spookehats said.
If posible it would be interesting to donate with Brave tokens. I would give all mine as I don't really use them for anything.
Or non I trusive ads. I would love nothing more than to be able to donate crypto or a server and have no ads, but at least right now it's not possible for me.

MangaDex being MangaDex, I would choose the first option, that's a crypto donation, but I would suggest not only just opening a crypto donation but also providing a simple tutorial, step by step guide on how to do it. I'm sure there's a lot of MangaDex demographic that wouldn't be deterred by such an option, it's MangaDex after all.

Ads for guests seems like a fair trade. I’d even accept a paid option to stop ads, as long as it would be reasonable.

I know it’s a shot in the dark, but there’s always the option to go legit like Crunchyroll. It would obviously mean only taking in series without official translations, but even then that’s a sizable portion of our library.

An option to opt-in to non-intrusive ads would be a good middle ground, as it would only affect those who are okay with it.

You could even have the option as a checkbox on the login page, and it only affect that session. This way, people could easily try out the feature without having to change their user settings, and then there could be a user setting to automatically opt-in when you log in.

We have already have had offers from an ad network who do "normal" banner ads, and of course under no circumstances would we go with anything annoying, like porn/sex ads, pop ups, video ads, etc etc.

Anyway, we still have lots of months before our contingency fund dries up, so there is some time to try crypto etc

And yes we will put some guides up on how to obtain crypto safely and securely. It's actually a lot easier than I first imagined - I was also new to crypto, lol.

See, I do remember Hanayo birthday being the same with Mangadex.
Personally I would say ads is best option. Heck, It'd probably be possible to sustain the site for whole year with just a month of ad incomes with that many visitors. Maybe just turn it off once we meet the quota or something then.

Also, that's lot of new staffs that I never heard of.

I think MangaDex should use a combination of these things.

First provide a way to donate crypto and a progress bar for the website so users can see where things are.

Second, provide opt-in ads, and perhaps an indication of how much the user is benefiting the site by doing this.

I prefer crypto myself. My big issue with it though is the delay on Coinbase between putting funds in CB and being able to use them. If there are more convenient alternatives that you could point users at, such as store purchases, this could help.

I'm also wondering if using a service like SubscribeStar is possible.

@inverness

I don't know if it's possible where you are, but these days, there are bitcoin cash machines, where you literally stuff cash in and the machine gives your mobile app wallet bitcoin.

Convenient and fast and don't have to trust your crypto or cash stuck with a third party provider like coinbase.

This might sound stupid af and may not be pursuable in any way possible, but is there a chance that you could strike an affiliation with Ao3 (Archive of our Own)? They run off donations and are always hugely successful when that time rolls around and I feel like it wouldn’t hurt to have their support. Again, this is likely not a feasible idea, but considering that both sites are about supporting fan works that border on the line of legality...

Other than that... though I’d prefer not to have ads, if push comes to shove, then non-intrusive ads could work, where donors are able to toggle them on and off like other people in the thread have said.

As for non-intrusive ads, it'd be nice to have a page dedicated to show nothing but ads. People would visit it daily for Mangadex's sake.
I've seen it done this way before, can't remember where, but I was pleasantly surprised by this odd choice.

@Jumballi Honestly not a bad idea. I would totally buy a server rank or something if it meant supporting Mangadex. Only problem is that Minecraft needs a server to run on, and that costs money.

Is it not possible for you guys to accept non-crypto donations, any more? I selected the option for non-intrusive ads, only because I unfortunately cannot afford 50-90 each month. I can gladly donate 20, or 30-40 on good months. But I don't understand how to crypto, lol

Regardless, I'm overjoyed to see MD continue! You guys run the best manga site on the internet, by far. I hope to be able to contribute in some way!!

Thank you all, for everything ^_^

It's a shame the previous donation route is no longer viable. Even if there was a donation source that took a small fee/cut, I think that would be preferable to me over ads. However, if there is some easy way to purchase crypto that does not involve me having to alter my tax returns, I would consider it.
