I don't mind ads at all!

I'd love to be able to support the site with donations, but am still struggling with landing a full-time jobb -currently not working at all have been struggling to get any help from the state, but its an uphill struggle to get ant type of help.

Why not all? Cryptourrency is the best option and currently it's become relatively more mainstream. But i doubt it is a viable mechanism for getting 500$ per month. So i think Donations should be the primary method of fundraising. The shortfall can be made up by getting affiliates if possible, and if that doesn't suffice then minimal ads.

Getting people to pay for servers is feasible but not desirable imo. It could be troublesome and risky

Damn, I wish I had donated via Paypal while I had the chance. I detest crypto, so I don't see that as much of an option for me. Perhaps if there was a legit crypto that wasn't a giant waste of electricity and was backed by the likes of Visa. However, the traditional cryptos that are loved by terrorists, human traffickers, CP producers, drug dealers, North Koreans... Uhhuh.

Happy Birthday!

Please, make sure the ads are safe and not pop-up ones which are terrible for mobile browsing. Also what happened to the planned sale of merch? Was it too risky? Thanks and good luck!

Nonintrusive ads are totally fine, the problem is losing the gimmick that MD is an ad-free place to read manga which certainly attracts a ton of people.

Adds are a poison. You bite into it once, and suddenly it's more and more. I don't know shit about crypto. But I know that I'd be willing to learn if it means I don't have to see adds. Not that I would in the first place. I already use Ublock origin everywhere as is.

A couple questions:

do you need to use only 7 ~$90 servers? if we are crowd funding servers it might be easier to get more people to pitch into smaller servers. (e.g. 20 people with $30 servers). This might help if people want to stop supporting and is a smaller cost per person.

if people are giving you credentials, do they still have access to the server? if so are you worried about that?

Non-intrusive ads with a way of getting adless MD through donation maybe?

@Zephyrus Cryptocurrency is easy. You create an account with a company like coinbase and you buy a small amount of coins and then send it to a wallet address. Mangadex just needs to decide what coin something like LTC (Litecoin) as it's a solid coin around almost as long as bitcoin but since it's only value is around $60 it's easy to buy an amount like .25 LTC or that and donate. Mangadex creates a wallet on a site like coinbase and can cash it out whenever to there bank. Typically only took about 3-5 days for cash out.

For others concerned about Crypto it's not reported to the IRS unless you spend more then like $20,000 or more then 200 transactions in a year. So not a concern for individuals at all.

BitPay complies with the requirements of Section 6050W of the Internal Revenue Code. This Section requires payment processors to provide information to the IRS through Form 1099-K reporting. "This requirement only applies in the case of merchants that receive payments from BitPay of more than $20,000 in gross volume and more than 200 separate payments in a single calendar year."

I honestly don't mind to donate, but the most I could give probably about 20 USD per month because : currency exchange rate 😭

I wouldn't mind ads, as long as they're not pop-ups. Sorry I couldn't give you more suggestions. Happy birthday, Mangadex! My gratitude for all the staffs for these wonderful two years!

Here's an idea I think would be nice. Try to have a web miner on it's own dedicated page. Users who want to help pay can just leave their browser on the page and help like that. If that doesn't lead to much profits, then move to intrusive ads.

Would selling merch to support the site be a viable option? Because I would definitely be on board with that. And there should be an option to pay a higher price as a donation. You could even sell just a 2$ sticker with the option of paying a higher price as a substitue for donation, but I'd like some cool merch.

Otherwise I'd be willing to donate with crypto. But please don't put ads on the site. Even if they are not intrusive, it's not about those few images I wouldn't even see, but about the idea of supporting something that made the internet the corporate hellhole it is now. It's such a great thing that a site can be supported financially by the people that love it, and they don't have to rely on other companies that can withdraw from supporting if they feel like it.

@Plykiya sorry for the mention, I'm sure you're all drowning in them by now, but since I see that the ads option seems to be winning for now, does it have to be limited to a single option? Could you still enable crypto donations even if you go with the ads option? My question's reasons are two fold, firstly because I would rather donate that have ads, as I share your distaste for them, but neither can I afford a server each month on my own, and secondly, I've been dipping my toes into crypto for about 3 ish months now, the reason being I switched to using Brave Browser, besides honestly loving the browser for it's comprehensive yet adjustable ad block and being built on chrome but not hogging nearly as much resources, they have a unique feature where they block all other ads but give you and option to opt in to see their own, non intrusive ads, and here's the deal breaker, pay you in crypto for the ads you see (or don't see, they show up as a windows notification, small and out of the way, I usually don't pay them much mind). They also have an option for you to donate that crypto directly to a website from your browser with their creators program while still having the option for you to withdraw that same crypto to a wallet in Uphold. Just FYI this is my honest, heartfelt endorsement for this system and I have in no way been asked to promote them, in the few months I've been using this I've made $75 (selling the crypto at the right time of course) with out putting in a single penny of my own, I think it could be a great help to the MD community.

Voted for 3rd because I'd "prefer" that out of those 4 presented. I liked just sending you money more or less directly.
I worked with cryptocurrencies on my job for some time and I don't want to touch it or come anywhere close to it ever again. Not saying I had bad experiences with it, just really dislike it.
Actually like 2nd one but right now, that's a lot of money/month for me. If someone were to do it and could prove it, I'd send them some money/month to offset the cost. Can't we just do it that way? Someone, some user funds the server(s) and others help him fund it. Give me few years till I get my own house/apartment and stable job WITH proper internet connection (4G is fast but not enough) and I'll build a fucking server room just for this purpose if it needs be. Or be that someone who funds a server.
3rd is fine but you explained in the post the issue with it.
4th, if it can be done correctly, is fine as well. And make Guests pay for it.

EDIT: How about all 4 and the less money you need to cover the cost, the less ads you have? And how about the "smaller" servers like someone mentioned before? I could definitely handle funding 20€-30€ server. It's a day at work at worst.

Personally I think adding ads with an option to turn them off would be a good idea. I also don't oppose a sponsor but my main problem with that is them trying to make a lot of changes. If you added an option to turn on ads I think many of us would be willing to do that and it could serve as a good test run before making it the default option for everyone who visits the site.

Put the non-intrusive ads, much easier. I even turn off the adblock despite mangadex not having any ads on it.
