To the whales offering to support a server, I salute you.

looks at looming pile of student debt Being a whale is unfortunately not viable for me, but an optional buy-in/monthly like Viz's $2/mo is certainly doable!

IMO, don't put all in one basket. Raise money with whatever method available, because you guys need to stash them, seriously.

I voted ad, but I will also do donation (no crypto tho, because yeah they're a hassle, to me at least). Trouble never comes alone. Once it happened, they will try to hunt you down again and again. That's why you need to stock up on the money, so should shit hit the fan, you have something ready for a plan B.

Maybe you could approach this from a different angle: open source the Mangadex site source code, and setup a Patreon or Ko-fi to support developing that, and then just happen to use some of those funds to support the servers. Probably a bit too blatant, but maybe worth thinking about.

Also, someone mentioned this above I think, but if you could get affiliate links for some of the retail links you have on many manga, I know I'd use them. I buy a decent amount of manga from Bookwalker, and if you could get a small kickback from me using the link, that'd be cool. Even if it was just periodic posts with limited time links, I'd keep an eye out for them.

While Im completely unsure how to setup or take care of one, I'd be willing to cover the monthly costs of a server for MD if that option is a feasible idea

Else, Im perfectly fine with the idea of non-invasive ads :)

I agree with the use of non-intrusive ads, like moderate amount of ads just enough to pay the servers, and why not a little more for reserve.

I trust MD.

Im not sure how much money they make but what about those watch a video ad type things. Mabye add an entire section that would be the only place the ad shows (Like a Support Us button.)

A mix of everything. Non-intrusive ads and definitely not in reader of course, unless you want to kill the site.
No intrusive anti-adblock, popups, or whatever crap like certain sites.

what if MD make some kind of merchandise like LHTranslations?

users can send some art to MD, and use it as content for merchandise or let a company affiliated with MD to make it. the profit can be shared among MD, affiliated company, and the artist.

I would respond with affiliate advertisement, since I prefer that to less savory advertisement. However I did respond with the last option mostly because of how it appears more difficult to procure affiliate ads.

Just hypothetically speaking here guys, pure hypothetical.

But lets say you guys came across a person who did a monthly blog about Manga they read and Anime they watch, and decide to let everyone know how awesome this persons blog is. So people go to that blog and yep it's an awesome blog. So awesome in fact people decide to support them by Patreon/Subscribestar now that person who gets a monthly Patreon/Subscribestar amount is free to do with that money as they please because you know it's their money. Maybe as an investment they turn it into cryptocurrency as the blog is just their side project and it's income is not essential to them, then they can spend that cryptocurrency on whatever they please or need to spend it on.

Because I think there are a lot of people here who'd really love to read that blog and maybe even donate to it's Patreon/Subscribestar and as long as they're regularly updating the blog say at least once a month they'd definitely be able to collect their Patreon/Subscribestar amount they need to invest in their Cryptocurrency demands.

What do you think of this hypothetical situation people?

Oh as for funding server costs sorry no idea I was just letting my mind wander before maybe merchandise? Anything but ads guys.

@Cyreader To add to the hypothetical, nothing says it can't include "interviews" of groups involved with certain activities, much like what was tried a few times this past year.

Sorry if this is a dumb question.
What would an affiliated partnership look like for this site?

@Hounder
Man wouldn't that be an awesome blog to read?
It'd be really cool to find out what it's like to hear from people who learned another language and the things they did with it, oh and people who learned how to draw and spend their time searching out images online to touch up and fix.
Also it'd be great to have them interview artists who are on Pixiv looking for exposure or projects they worked on in the past.
They can always look for new books and anime people haven't seen and link to affiliate sites for people to buy those anime and manga from official licensed sellers with no hassles.

Oh wow geeze I'd really love to find a blog like that an amazing awesome blog about Anime and Manga but I feel I could only trust one recommended by this sites developers any others might not meet my needs or not be worth supporting on patreon/subscribestar I feel like I could only trust the blog this site recommends because they would spend their subscriber money sensibly.

I am sorry that I have no spare funds to spend on anything other than daily necessities, as I have 3 people I am responsible for, not to mention the additional baggages behind them. I'd like to contribute if I am able to, but at the same time I know I can't because other than my sleep time, my hands are full. So... Once again, I am sorry. This is a good site, imperfect as it may be. Keep on bettering it and fight on!!!
