I like how Lucas don't judge the runaway adventurers because they fled since this monster was something no one was expecting, and this monsters clearly outrank the adventurers and this could mean certain death to them. As someone who managed to survive for so long in a job that many die young Lucas certainly had to pick his battles too and run away a lot.

Its cruel yeah, but its reality, very few people would play hero, maybe the previous Lucas would sacrifice himself as decoy so the other people could run away since he was old and his life was already trash up to this point, but a younger Lucas who still had hope to achieve something in his life probably would run away too, if possible maybe he would try to help the kid and the women to flee but only if it didn't risk his life in process.
