It still has to serve the greater plot. I feel like Zagan is already past behaving like that. The very beginning of the story already had him interfere because he was annoyed by another mage making the neighbourhood restless, which means that while he might not have interfered due a sense of justice, he could still interfere for other reasons. Now he actually has a wife and a daughter with genuine feelings for them, so totally ignoring kids being threatened by scumbags probably won't happen.

But yeah, in another story it could potentially be a good scene to build the character in such a direction.

More to the point, having slavers around at all will make the population restless.

Therefore, Zagan would be like, "Oh great. Slavers. These fucking cancers."

Also pretty sure that even if Zagan wasn't sold off to his first "master" by a slaver, then he probably had enough close brushes with them to have... feelings about them. Very unpleasant feelings.

Chastel's ability as a competent field commander was in full display here. I like that she isn't trying to do everything by herself and leveraged her unit of holy knights effectively with appropriate tactics, in conjunction with her own attacks. Actually good combat with teamwork and an excellent magic assist by Nephtheros sent that chimera fleeing. Since the other knights didn't get healed, It'd be interesting to see some consequences following their deaths.

Barbaros, ever the tsundere. But I can respect how he didn't immediately show up to help when it was Chastel's turn to show off, he only appeared when she asked for him. It's also not often I see the long hair of a male character get pointed out as a problem (comically, in this case). If Barbaros had a shorter haircut Nephtheros wouldn't have been able to grab onto him so easily.

Poor mob couple, Zagan unintentionally gave them the stink eye when he was only intending to watch and learn from them. So I guess this is the introduction of the new priestess who's supposed to report to Chastel soon. I wonder if that other kemonomimi girl she's protecting is more than just a one off character.
