They have a year before they go "independent" he lost his crystal but he will get another one after the year. Even then if he loses it again he doesn't die he just loses all his power.

Had to fight to continue as demon lords. He dropped out of the running as a demon lord (temporarily, since the newbies get a one year restart) when his dungeon core was destroyed; he's a demon lord in name only at this point, as the core is what grants all the powers of a demon lord. There's no rule stating they must kill the demon lords beaten, either.
