I will hate this author so much if he creates all this drama around Hermine just to scrap her latter for the artist girl. There is only a few more tasteless things in a comic for me then to build a great and unique lover candidate and to just suddenly scrap them later for someone generic that showed up out of nowhere. Borderline NTR.
Considering that the Hermine story deviates from the source material for now, I will leave a shred of hope.

also comparing a guy not ending up with a girl he's talked to basically twice, amounting to only uncomfortable onesided convos of "thank you for saving my life" and "share your innovative military strategies with me", to a person cheating on their spouse is a weird ass sentiment. tbh i don't think they even have much chemistry so far. he's keenly away of their power imbalance due to her more prestigious household and is lowkey avoiding her attempts to connect (which have all been platonic-coded so far), she's taking a step back realising it may be due to their houses having justifiable bad blood. even if mc doesn't resent the family and only the sister, it still feels like rubbing shoulders with nobility is the last thing he wants right now. he's locked in with preventing disaster and is trying to alter the future as minimally as possible while still achieving a good outcome, he doesnt' really have room for romance atm

lily has literally said like one line and hasn't even met the mc yet, it's impossible to come up with an informed opinion on her. give it some time. by your logic hermine was stealing mc away from mazel, whom he has greater emotional attachment and actual chemistry with even if it equally platonic

It's not suspicious at all. The army is always trouble, just look at the rape and violent crime rates anywhere the US has it's bases compared to any other city in that particular country

I like Hermine's manga design. She looks cool & badass, as a knight should be.
The LN images make she looks like a child

Also the girls helping her armor up look like they could join a battle too. Props to the artist for giving a Knight family servants that could double as more fighters. Could've easily just made them 'cleaning' maids

Beside all the disadvantages she's already facing, the worst part is -- as a noble and military woman -- she doesn't actively pursue romance herself, leaving it entirely to her parents / superiors dictating her course of action. If she keeps staying put like that, does anyone expect MC to suddenly have a change of heart and look her way? Right now he's the hot stuff among nobility, even without the artist girl his father still has a ton of better candidates as far as political marriage goes.

Oh shit, that's a big one. I had my hopes on hermine the entire time. I hope she wins tho. But a Hero sister, considering the importance of mazel later in the story is a huge hindrances for hermine. Fuck, still hopes hermine won.

True, i am agree on your point so far. For now, the only thing we can do is to see where the story goes from here. Hero's sister is a tough challenge right of the bat, even considering lily's role later in the story, every flag is shows lily had enormous upper hand for the love interest candidate. But the story is still going, far from over, there's still hope for hermine, considering the focus on war in the series. Wich one the author gonna take, would hermine be the new love interest or remains as platonic until the end? Will author take the obvious move and put Lily as the end game? Or Will Werner doesn't end up with both of them? Who knows, we can only hopes that we have satisfying conclusion. I am currently on hermine, wanna go take a look on the novel, maybe got a chance of heart.

FYI to everyone: the mangaka became overwhelmed with work to the point of not being able to understand written words anymore, so the series is taking a hiatus until mangaka gets better (via publisher's twitter).

Chapter 19 is out, it took a while and from reading the psot above it seems like 20 will take even more, but the mangaka need to recover, just patiently wait.
My prediction was off, the suspicious behaviour was because they were hiding something,

hiding that bandits had conquered the village and the villagers were their slaves.
In the next chapter MC moves with a small group to their base, kills and captures them, the female noble moves in too, she finds a bandit busy raping and harming with sever physical violenge a poor girl, of course the dude gets put down like he deserves.
From there it follows to MC organizing a lynching of every surviving criminal, and he personally executes them, stopping the villagers before they do it, as that is the job of nobles, he doesn't like it but knows he have to do it, he was already showed similar executions in the past in his training as heir.
The weird behaviour of the village chief seems to have been on purpose to make MC and company investigate.

To everyone wondering how he knew what she said, he watched her say it, as he explained to the audience, in his head, why he didn't like that family. I believe this was at the start of the Stampede when he was lamenting about his situation and who was around him and the chain of command.
