I work in the pet industry and have heard "cats are easy pets" more than once and can tell you every time it's from someone who isn't doing it properly. Not to mention cats are one of the least consistent pets when it comes to petting/stroking due to a wide variability in their tolerance for being touched and prevalence of undiagnosed hyperaesthesia; some LOVE to be petted while others will straight up rip your hands to bits for even daring to lightly brush them with a finger tip.

Never get any pet without researching it. Pets are like furry toddlers and take about as much effort lol. If you want something to stroke get a stuffed toy.

P.S. Mane Coons, English shorthair and Scottish folds are aesthetic as fuck.

A lot of the places that say they don't allow pets actually will if you talk to the person in charge a bit. They're just trying to prevent unnecessary damages to the property and issues with other tenants or people interested in moving in with a blanket ban of sorts, so there is some room for negotiation sometimes. Mostly what it'll probably come down to is you offering to pay more in some capacity.

Based on personal experience, cats are easy to manage when you let them do their own thing. They're very independent and you only need to give them an hour a day of attention. But that depends on the cat itself and how big your living space is. Ideally, small living spaces should have two cats or so to keep each other entertained.

Also, I've be scratched by numerous cats and even have scars. I'd say that's proof my experience isn't faulty.
