The fact that you even dare speak of entitlement with regards to this means you're either totally ignorant or shameless to an inhuman degree. At least read the relevant threads before sputing nonsense (and if you had and still have the gall to write this, then simply fuck yourself, preferably sideways).
Or, y'know, I just have a sense of perspective.
They've been accepting donations for years. While it's fine as long as it's meant for supporting the site without ulterior motives - those definitely were there. They've been planning to go "legit" for almost as long and the main motivation was building up a big enough user base for appealing to big publishers whom would buy them out (including user data). Your donations did not help maintain the site, they were just a little bonus on the investment.
A lot of assumptions there, but I'll go with it. So... what? If they can go legit and do it right, more power to them. If they had done so already, the site wouldn't be under attack now. It's silly to think the site could go on like this forever without drawing notice.
I haven't ever donated to the site (remember, it's completely voluntary). I've been reading manga here for more than 7 years and haven't paid a dime. But even if I had, I think I would have gotten my money's worth. Building a site like this ain't easy or cheap. They don't owe me, and they don't owe you.
They've sold out to NamiComi. While they refuse to admit it outright, it was mentioned that NamiComi would be taking over. What, we're supposed to believe a corporation is just "helping out", because they have (and I quote) "the legal framework"? I've no idea what kind of an idiot one would have to be to swallow this, but clearly the staff here sees us as such.
This is neither here nor there. Again, they don't owe you.
Legal risks? You mean like this one, where they immediately caved in and are so protective of the guys that threatened them, that they even refuse to say who it was no matter what? That and the idiotic excuses for why there was no heads-up or anything... they were willing to take no risk at all to their "legit" scheme.
If the publishers had wanted to, they could have come at MangaDex with the big guns right from the start. You can't really believe that there is no risk in running a site like this, no matter how much they're willing to cooperate with legal actions.
On the contrary, they're eager to throw anyone under the bus. I'm not even mad about it, since there was no way in hell a company from the other side of the world would actually shell out for a legal process that will gain them nothing. I just find it terribly pathetic, even more so that somene considers them heroes for such spinelessness...
What do you want them to do? They have no legal ground to stand on. And I'm not sure who exactly has been "thrown under the bus." They simply stopped hosting the illegal scanlations that were DMCA'd.
Oh, so you mean the people who made the site just did it for shits and giggles, not in any way encouraging anyone to scanlate and upload here? I'm starting to think you have a stake in this little simping act, it sounds just like the BS defense the staff gave.
It doesn't matter if they "encouraged" anyone to upload here. Look, if you illegally upload a bunch of movies to Youtube, and somebody comes after Youtube, and the movies get taken down, you can't be mad at Youtube. No one made you put them up there. Take responsibility for your own actions.
Good day, sir.
