I'd say a reasonable part of Miko's timidity is that she's constantly aware of how outnumbered and outclassed she is.

All of the various exorcists aren't able to perceive ghosts outside of their weight class. Julia's a small fry so all she can see is small fry and sometimes the outlines of normal ghosts; Granny is mid so she can see the normal ghosts and is vaguely aware of dangerous ghosts; Rom is respectably strong and can actually see most dangerous stuff. (Though he still couldn't see Michiru's guardian kami.) And since they can't normally perceive the things outside their weight class, they can't normally get into fights with said creatures.

But Miko can see everything while having no real ability to defend herself. For whatever reason, she's exempted from the safety net that pretty much all of the actual exorcists have. There'd been a question of whether she's really in danger, but the absolute fucking mess that Rom got turned into from seeing the Old Man answers this with yes, yes she is.

And we've seen that the world is super fucking haunted; there's basically nowhere she can go that isn't full of ghosts, up to and including her own bedroom and bathroom. (Horsedog ghost seems to be there to protect her dad, not the rest of the family.)

Miko basically lives under 100% ghost surveillance, which makes it really, really hard for her to reach out for help. If she ever starts talking about it within earshot of something tough enough to tank Hana's aura or withstand Rom, she's cooked on the spot.

It's strange to see people complaing about Miko's passiveness towards ghost in the very same chapter she decided to do something about the NTR Ojisan to protect her wife and side bitches friends. And unlike Romm, Mitsue and Seto who have dealt with this bullshit their entire lives, Miko just started seeing ghosts like a year ago and has absolutely no idea to what to do. And the few times she tried to interact with ghosts, she almost got mauled by them if it weren't for the intervention of her future wife or other outside factors. If nothing else, it is commendable that she isn't a blubbering mess scared of coming out of her room.

Miko only started to see things recently, right? As stated somewhere at the beginning. I think she got that ability transfered to her from her dad, who passed away 1 year prior. It took some time for it to take root in her, but eventually, she started to have the same ability as her dad too.

Couples calling one another using san or chan seems to be more a personal choice than anything.

Quick web search disagrees: Titles and Honorifics
"-Chan" performs a function similar to "kun", except that it is used mainly with girls. It's quite an affectionate word, which might be used with a friend, a classmate, a little sister, a baby, a grandmother, a girl or a woman to let her know you think she is sweet.

"-chan" can also be used with little boys; though from adolescence, it becomes rather feminised.
Wife calling her husband "chan"? English has some not very complimentary words for such a guy.

You guys have literally lost the plot.

Miko is scared of the spirits. She does not want to give the them any indication that she can see them. This includes admitting out loud that she can see them when they might be able to overhear her. She doesn't just want dangerous ones to not harm her or her friends, she wants all of them to leave her alone entirely if possible, because even the harmless ones freak her out.

The passivity is baked into the story's premise.
You missed the point.

1) The plot is how the author implements his desires. The author wants to create a world of passivity, so he creates a plot that explains/causes that. I'm criticizing the author's desire to create such a world/situation.

2) The implementation "author's goal" -> plot points etc. doesn't work. E.g. Miko repeatedly shows courage despite terrifying situations, so it's not like she lacks the courage. Moreover, she knows people who could act as mentors, and we know other people have been mentored. Yet, for no good reason, mentoring doesn't happen. (Again, we already know that Miko is not "stick my head in the sand" level passive.) There's the author's goal (world of passivity), but for that to be good writing, the world lore, etc. have to support it -- but it doesn't.

Yep. Not sure when it's first mentioned, but it's definitely mentioned when the topic of "which ghosts are safe to talk to" comes up. (At which point Miko is given some not very helpful advice.)

But yeah, good point. I need to back and add that to my pending plot points post.

A lot of that is speculation. Largely because the author won't tell us much.

The core problem with Miko's situation is: however bad her situation is, being uninformed/untaught makes it much worse. And it's certainly possible for Miko to be educated
  • Miko has asked questions before and had them answered by Rom. Therefore it is possible for her to receive instruction.
  • Miko is certainly not under organized observation by spirits. Other than that one stalker entity, almost everything else she runs into is just a random walker.
  • Even if she were being constantly watched, there are ways to indirectly receive education, e.g. reading books and watching Rom's videos.
  • Again, we've seen other people (including Rom, who is very strong) get mentored. And it's not that Rom has any innate anti-ghost abilities. Instead he uses various artifacts and rituals. Why can't Miko learn those?
  • And if it were true that Miko's perception makes it difficult to teach her, then the author should have told us that. Rom and Mitsu should have discussed how they want to educate, but that it's difficult and then try to seek ways around the difficulty. But that doesn't happen.

Quick, slap him, Miko! Then, when he's disoriented, beat him to a pulp! Sure, beating up an old man might be a bad look, but it'll be worth it. "He was trying to kill my Dad's ghost" will totally hold up in court.

I'm not worried about dad at all, I'm sure his horse ghost is going to appear and will be powerful. This may really start going the direction where the characters would get their own guardian ghost, since the dad, seto and michiru has them. Rom may get the fox and I hope Miko gets Train hatchet ghost

I think you misunderstand where this manga's coming from, so you aren't meeting it where it really is. You're treating it like it's a real supernatural mystery series, and maybe that's because it's taken the supernatural mysteries a bit too seriously as it's gone on. But at its core, going all the way back to its origin as a Pixiv comic, Mieruko-chan is a comedy, a cruel prank being played on its main character. All the mysteries and worldbuilding comes second to tormenting this poor girl with scary monsters (and super freaks).

I didn't realized it was the parents, I decided to read back and there was a Hana impostor(!) I wonder if the old man ghost's fault.
Thought we now know who Miko gets it from, but I wonder how her father was in his lifetime. Whether he met any psychics, prepared anything for his daughter, and what's to come of the clash with Seto. It seemed that while having her attention diverted, that he had to be welcomed into the household by Miko...
and another detail to point out, her father is always seen wearing his glasses in Miko's interactions with him as her father. the ghost in her house, and the point in which she starts seeing ghosts- I wonder if her father is somehow involved
