I bet it was the ghost mother who killed the cats while possessing him, and he was tormented by the unexplainable dead of the cats he brought home. Hence, his dead eyes.

(though I think he know her (ghost mother) presence and keep bringing back cats to his house even though he know what awaited them because he thought that the ghost mother want it, so he keep doing it out of the ingrained habit of submitting to her in his childhood until her death).

Wait wait wait wait wait wait wait. People who are sensitive to spirits get sick when they are around him. What if cats are the same? He may really really like cats but everytime he tries to own on they get really sick and dies fast.

I wasn’t expecting the twist that he actually may not be doing anything to the cats. Then again, I wasn’t even expecting him to show up in the story again. His mother is the cause of everything and is likely haunting him. Maybe she killed the cat and he killed her? Maybe she committed suicide and haunts him? Parents are humans too, vulnerable and bound to break. And they have a huge effect on their children who are even more vulnerable and easy to break.

Either way, the author does seem to enjoy playing on our interpretations. He lets us go off the basis these spirits are “evil and bad” and purposely misleads us. It’s cool that this went from episodic to a more consistent story.

Man is the real monster... OR IS HE? I mean, if he saves cats, then maybe all those cats following him around are just the spirits of cats he's cared for that died (cats rarely live to 20, and usually shorter than usual if they've had rough years as strays) and which are protecting him.

Yep there is the twist.

Seems Mieruko has a misunderstanding, the guy was probably taking care of all the stray cats. All the spirits around him were probably Cats he took care of but passed away.

No he wasn't taking care of the cats, rememeber the chapter they first met him in??
The full of tatoos bald dude who they gave the stray cat to had white spirits following him, not black like this one

he's not trying to protect cats he just wants to hurt them so badly that he'd risk his own body to do it.

To anyone who doesn't think he's killing the cats go reread chapter 19 where they confirm that cats are being murdered in his neighborhood. Mieruko confirms that this chapter as well by seeing more and more cat ghosts springing up around him. Also he had blood on his hands in chapter 19 that he had to wash off.

I can’t believe there’d be a character this complex. I can’t wait to see whether he’s good or bad

I don't like it when an obvious antagonist ended up being a misunderstood one last minute before he / she died, it feels forced and just done to make us feel bad with the antagonist

@marghedsmet
I keep forgetting stuff like that so thanks for the reminder. I thought they might go for the lame redemption option.

Whoever said the thing following him is his mom and his mom is the one killing the cats or pushing him into killing the cats, I think they are correct.

Huh ??? why are people thinking he's a good character sacrificing himself to get the cat

He's clearly so dead on obsessed to get the cat to kill it he didn't notice the car

This is a plus the problem gets killed and everything is back to normal
