I get the MonMusu comparisons, but I still don't agree with them. It seems like there's a trend both series follow in the introduction of monster races, especially with a lamia as a main cast memeber alongside the MC, and Kanemaki Thomas has done some work for the MonMusu anthologies in the past. They're way different beyond that, though. Oishasan feels like there's more depth to it, the chronology is a bit more established, and visually completely different, not to mention a wildly different setting.

I'm mostly just here to ramble about the artist.

I absolutely adore Kanemaki Thomas' visual style, and have for a long time, so I'm a bit biased. I just love seeing so much complex penwork all over the pages. So much of the background is still detailed, complex penwork that meshes so well with the foreground without clashing. His extensive use of sharp black inking alongside the linework and white space also amazes me every time I see it. Visually he doesn't try to go for photorealism, but Kanemaki still manages to do some wonderfully fleshed out, grounded art with a really charming style that I'm finally glad to see in a serialization with a larger audience and not in the niche of monster girl H-doujin.

You have no idea how happy I was when I heard "Monster Musume" again after 5 years, but then I got this, the "Totally not a rip-off, just an inspiration ha..ha..." version of Monster Musume. Yeah and I don't care about the world building or the medieval setting or the romance or whatever bullshit. The comedy is horrible, the cast is horrible, the story is boring and generic. I prefer the original Monster Musume with better comedy and basically better everything.

The comedy is your usual over done, overused slapstick crap from a violent jealous female to an eccentric male main character and oh yes childhood friend trope too. The world building is pretty nice but overall the story being told in it is not interesting in any way. Doctor has no personality, he's just do medicine, touch on some non-humans for ecchi effect while enthralled in doing medicine, then it's time to get smacked by a lamia sidekick with bag of hammers for a personality because somehow when you see that coming from a mile away you're still supposed to laugh nearly every chapter. Lots of depth to the medical side of the fantasy races though and that's cool but I wish it was in a different story with different characters. The relationship dynamic is something you could pull out and insert into the space of so many other gag and ecchi mangas with worse worlds and nothing actually going for them. Just slap some twin ponytails on the girl and you've literally got 50% of them covered. Disappointed really. I want to like this but it's just so lazy in that one glaringly visible spot.
