Look, I've never been abused the way the MC here was... but I feel like the psychology of an abuse victim wouldn't quite work like the author wants it to? If living is such misery and he's truly not afraid of death—even seemingly welcoming it as his reaction to surviving being eaten seems to indicate—then there should have be no barrier preventing him from committing suicide in a way that's definitely fatal like

The description sounded awesome but instead of getting a main character with actual grit and willpower, we get a wimpering dog that has been beaten so much that he just wants to die but can't.

His backstory is sad and all but instead of rising above it he just wants to die? Couldn't he have told the god that right away that he doesn't want to live anymore?
With a skill like ''indomitable spirit'' I imagine a almost broken down warrior making a last stand not fearing death. Instead we get this guy.
Also you would expect a guy who want to die and whom can block out pain to be the cool collected emotionless type but no this guy is just in constant despair, atleast have some rage but nope.
