I much prefer an in-over-his-head weakling who has to pull some new bullshit out of his ass to solve every problem that he causes over a generic super-strong cool guy protagonist where you know exactly how every encounter is going to end before it starts.
All the shitty power fantasy isekai are making people forget that flawed characters make for better stories since they actually have room to grow and have, y'know, character development, instead of "I was cool and strong and now I'm cooler and stronger" development.
It's also remarkable to me that everyone's shitting on this guy and predicting that the entire story is just gonna be about him being an asshole when we've barely figured out what's going on and he's just now figured out how badly he fucked up and is about to go do something to solve his problem in person. Sure, he might be too late, but he's not stupid on purpose.
People eat Overlord up because it has a fake-it-till-you-make-it protagonist supported by a cast of super cool strong characters who buy into his bullshit, but then you have a protagonist like this who's more blatantly incompetent and doesn't try to hide it as much, which makes for a more interesting cast since some characters buy his bullshit and some of them know he's not cut out for the job, but everyone goes "waaah I don't like him because he's an asshole."
Protagonists don't have to be likeable, they don't all have to be morally perfect flawless blank slates for you to self-insert into. I'm way more interested in seeing the direction this story takes, in seeing if this guy gains more confidence in himself or becomes a better leader or turns into a useless NEET, than I am in seeing how cheat skill #42069 gets abused to get someone a harem. Sure, this fucker's probably gonna solve all his problems by spamming magic items since artifact use seems to be his unique special skill or something, but at least he has a shitty personality to fix while he does it.
