But peasants being 'forced' to do the same labour because they're unable to earn a living any other way isn't the same thing, right?
Life is harsh without technology, it's not weird to make slaves do such things. During the industrial revolution we had kids of poor families and orphans die in coal mines.

If slaves have some limited rights in this universe they're probably comparable to thralls, laws depended on the country but here's an example:

in Alemannic law, slaves may not be sold outside of one's own province (37.1). A slave's owner is entitled to pass judgement on him, but only within the law (37.2). Slaves may not work (and may not be forced to work) on a Sunday (38)
