Netflix Lists a Documentary Film about Anime for August 5th

Netflix has listed a documentary film concerning anime titled Enter the Anime for August 5th. Netflix describes the documentary as follows:

What is anime? Through deep-dives with notable masterminds of this electrifying genre, this fast-paced documentary seeks to find the answers.

I do not like the fact they refer to anime as a genre as it's too broad to be one (it would be more correct to say it's a style of animation), but the documentary would be 58 minutes long and would be available to stream in both Japan and the United States, but not the Philippines however.

Is anyone interested in checking out this documentary? Personally I am not thinking about watching it at the moment, but maybe that would change.

I do not know. I do not follow heavily what the website does to know exactly what good things they have done. Well I guess when I think about it the one thing I can point out is that they have made anime more accessible to non-anime fans. I heard of cases people becoming interested in anime thanks to Netflix. It's not something that is changing the world worthy but it's something and it's all I got.

Does it have something to do with the upcoming documentary that you, Black General?

Well there is a reason why that meme of the Manga/Anime/Netflix Adapation is around.

Not that Im going to watch it(not my taste) but I hope the guy who did it is an actual person who likes anime, and not just some political video.

I have not seen nor heard of the meme concerning Netflix with manga and anime.

As for the intent of the documentary from reading the original article whoever made the film did bring in important people from the anime industry, so I would say there is a high chance it was put together by someone who does care about anime, but that is something that would be made clear when it comes out.

Save yourself the time and find something else to watch.

I was actually going create a topic about the documentary and my thoughts on it in the anime section when I got around to it, but since you started it I did decide to watch the documentary after all just to see it for myself before I listen/read others thoughts on it, and . . . it was something. The good things I can say about it was I did learn a few things. Particularly how kawaii culture started as a rebellion over an aspect of society and that Toei Animation serve as being the "Disney" of Japan (I thought it was Studio Ghibli that was considered the Disney of Japan). I also imagine it must have been neat to see how the anime that is being streamed on netflix was made for those who have watched those shows.

With that said everything else was. . .cringy and not as great. Particularly for me I did not like how the documentary was making anime to be this particularly thing which is action/sci fi shows fill with tons of bloodshed and over the top gore, and I was beginning to think we were past the days of people putting anime in this particular box that is meant for adults, but this documentary shows we apparently have not fully with netflix trying to present that image now. Granted documentary did at least feature shows that were not of those genres and feature that kind of content, and I get that this what appeal to the director/narrator of the documentary (it's reminiscent of what I heard most other people get into anime in the past), but to use that as a opening like that to the point of making it seem like just about "every" anime is like that is very misleading. I also did get the feeling or a thought in the back of my mind that the direction of the documentary was all over the place, and from reading ANN's review of the documentary as well as a video about it my thoughts were right.

By the way, out of curiosity what shows that Netflix help produce are terrible? The only anime I have gotten around to see on netflix so far are the ones they have license (particularly one from TRIGGER and the other from Kyoto Animation), and I have heard a couple of things about the shows directly made for netflix, which are mix I guess save for one that is base on a video game series.

The memes about Netflix anime comes from Netflix's animation branch being TERRIBLE. Remember their involvement in Neo Yokio and how that turned out? Super Drags? Netflix in house animation creative staff have a TERRIBLE track record. Anything animation Netflix is directly involved in besides funding tends to turn into shet unless it's a comedy or sitcom animation. A lot of their better shows are actually made by Dreamworks and involve staff outside of Netflix. And bribes, lots of pet project cash infusions.

Netflix also keeps removing anime series after releasing them. This tends to favor cheap and poor quality anime series staying on the platform, while the expensive good shet gets taken down from Netflix. Thus the meme that Netflix only had bad anime.

Netflix also keeps trying to turn all the popular anime into Live action catastrophes, which is ALSO hilarious and again, the meme that Netflix only makes bad anime, going so far as to turn good anime into BAD LIVE ACTION ANIME.

The documentary is a college graduate final assignment about a topic they couldn't choose themselves, so they just went to Twitter and read a couple dozens of tweets about anime. The editing doesn't help either. What a disaster.

Netflix's animators are shit, and don't even know how to costcut in a way that doesn't make their anime look like dogshit. They're fking awful at their job, and god knows why anyone would want to know about how they butcher shit.

I haven't watched it yet, but since you brought up the violence and gore stereotype, I was wondering if the documentary also portrayed Anime like some soft-core porn outlet. Because, I hate it when people who don't really watch Anime assume that's all it is.

Oh yes those adaptations. I have seen one of them, which is Death Note and it was way~ different from the source material, but not in a good way. It's a shame thought because from what I have learn given the nature of the story Death Note could translate into a live action film, but that would take people who knew what they were doing.

I have not heard of the latter, but from doing a quick search it does not look appealing for me at all (it's those character designs). I have heard of the former, but I never bother watching due to hearing not so good things about it, and the fact given the kind of story I heard it was it did not seem like something that would appeal to me. The only thing I can recall was that people joked about these tomberones that were feature in the show.

If you mean if the documentary also show sexual fan service then no. The director of the documentary just made a big emphasize of anime being over the top violence filled with intense gore and bloodshed. With that said I understand how you feel as I hate hearing that people assume anime is just porn (in fact I hate when people, non human animals, and whatever gets misunderstood in general).

They only had it available on computers, which is the reason they gave for getting rid of them. No one used them because no one knew about them.

I see. However you implied in your earlier post that Netflix took down the review feature because of situations like with Enter the Anime and it getting mostly negative reviews, which is something Netflix does not want potential viewers to see as they worry it would make them less willing to watch the show they want to promote.

Alright, but with that said it would seem the reviews were doing their job of informing others what to/not to watch on netflix given how they effected your choice (although the quality of public reviews generally speaking are typically not as well put together compared to ones done by professional reviewers). However I guess this was something netflix did not want after all.
