Since, by staff's own admission, the current level of communication leaves to be desired, I would like to offer my help in figuring out what the community wants to know about the recently-released feature.please try to be kind while we get ourselves in a good rhythm of features releases and better at communicating new features and changes
The feature was released to every user last Saturday, and so far it hasn't had been positively received by the community, given that the release is a regression in user experience compared to what it was before the release, not helped by the initial wording of the feature saying that only the paying users are allowed to access it, with no indication that us Group 3 plebs can still use the forums (mostly) as normal, not helped by the fact that, at the moment of writing, we still need to wait for someone with the privilege to create chapter threads to let us in.
For what I gather is the majority of forum users, me included, the release was an unexpected surprise. There are bits of information about the release available on the Announcements subforum and comments scattered across forums by members of staff of different levels of involvement with the feature, a single sentence in the newly introduced "Notice Board", and on several other platforms which are not MangaDex, but there isn't a single authoritative-enough and accessible source that would give us a full picture about the change, and so the community is left to make their own conclusions; and given that the response from staff was to dismiss our concerns as "bandwagoning" and lock the announcement thread, it was all the more reason to not see the change in a positive light.
In a private conversation with a member of staff, I was told that
and by development updates, I presume it means the announcements forum. I don't think it is a realistic or reasonable thing to expect from the community if the site works to our expectations. In that same conversation, I was toldIt is not our fault that you do not read development updates
I could swear MangaDex had other mainsite notification mechanisms, but either way, that's good! Let's check what it says:Good thing we have now released the Notice Board
...Yeah, this is less than nothing. Commenting across titles and chapters was available for a couple years now, and in the light of Group 3 seeing that they must be a paying user to comment, this notice reads like they were now barred from commenting, and suffice to say, this is not enough info to ease the minds of the community.Commenting across titles and available chapters is now enabled for Group 1 (Dex-chan Supporters) and Group 2 (Data Contributors)
So here's my grand suggestion:
It would be lovely if an announcement was made using the now-released Notice Board containing the following information:
- What motivates the change? For us regular visitors, the forums work just fine, so would be good to know why things need to change.
- What is the release plan? It was mentioned in forum posts that the comments are being developed incrementally, so would be good to mention that what has been released so far isn't the end state.
- Who and how can access the new comments, when they'll be made available to general public, and whether the old forums are still accessible and how.
- What is the functionality of the new comments?
- What are the advantages of the comments compared to old forums?
- What are the current limitations of the new comments compared to old forums. To my knowledge, the new comments have a limit of 1000 symbols, there might be limitations in available formatting, so at the very least it doesn't seem like they are a superior replacement to the old forums.
- What is the envisioned end state of the feature? Will it ultimately have all of the old forums functionality implemented?
- What is the situation with the old forums?
- Will we have the old chapter threads functionality and if so, for how long?
- Will our old threads be migrated into the new comments?
- What is the overal vision for the existance of the old forums? Phased out completely, used only for non-chapter/non-title discussions, used for deep-er chapter discussions when compared to small comments?
- How do we communicate our feedback, and do you want to hear feedback in the first place?
- Is there a world where, if the feature turns out super unpopular with the community, the site staff decides not to go forth with the feature?
