They really shouldn't have adapted the childhood friend from the previous arc to be a creep. He eventually became bros with Ryuuichi during this arc trying to help this new girl. Kinda sad.

To be fair he was still a creep in the novel. But yeah that's my one gripe with the manga's version of events, he doesn't go as far as actually assaulting her in the novel. He actually grows as a person eventually fixing his friendship with Shizuna and finally moving on. He ends up becoming somewhat bros with Ryuichi and we even see the beginnings of a new romance for him, do yeah its a real missed opportunity for his character. Everything else though has been pretty one to one. But who knows maybe they will still do that but it will much rougher given the whole attempted assault thing.

Yes actually lol, the boss of the bar Ryuichi works/hangsout at is pretty cool and actively helps out and supports him. Also remember Ryuichi's one guy friend(drawing a blank on his name atm) is also pretty chill, like yeah he sleeps around but he wasn't a rapist like the original ntr story Ryuichi was, just a typical playboy. It's basically only Sohei and Akira that are like that. Not to mention like pointed out in previous comments Shizuna's childhood isn't as bad in the novel and actually became a better person over time.

I’d be impressed if they actually tried to keep the childhood friend in given the different circumstances, like it would elevate my opinion of the manga as a whole.

Not that he needs redemption, and honestly it wouldn’t make sense for him and Shizuka to mend their relationship, even if forgiveness is offered. At the same time committing to a story beat with pretty heavy consequences and playing it through is tough and would earn my respect.
