Because most of the time they aren't meant to be their own thing. They're just meant to be there to drive people to go read (or, more accurately, buy) the LN to get the rest of the story. Usually it only seems like they continue for a long time if they get significant readership. Otherwise they wrap up usually in less than 20 chapters or they get to plug along until the minute the readership looks like it's dipping and then the curtain falls.
