Me. I was a straight-A student, and I knew everything necessary to navigate the ghettos I grew up in, but for all my book smarts and street smarts, I shut down the two times a girl kissed me unprompted.

The first kiss was from my crush on the cheek and I spent a month panicking internally over it because she never brought it up, so I finally decided to ask her out. She kissed me, on the lips, because she wanted to see if she could like a boy, but sadly she didn't feel that spark when kissing me. Which, honestly? Getting complimented by a lesbian to the point she'd seriously consider switching teams for me was pretty fucking empowering. It's been a bit over twelve years since then, but we still send each other memes and cat pics over Discord, and have the occasional philosophical discussion.

Sorry to hear the first one went so badly. Glad the second time around was much more amicable and didn't result in either lost friendship or dumb rumor mill nonsense.

But to your larger point - indeed, different forms of intelligence are absolutely a thing, and the other person--whether it was simply them being glib for comedy, or an earnest reaction and question--will hopefully realize that, for a bunch of 15-16 year olds, this sorta makes sense, especially in the context of Satou's life and what he's had to put up with to now.

There are plenty of dumbass romcom Male Protags that deserve all of the ridicule for "missing things some readers think are obvious".
Satou is not one of them.

I think the novel convey this better. Chinatsu is not embarrassed, at least not in the usual Japanese romcom way girls tend to be embarrassed at the prospect of liking someone. She was more like unsure if Saito actually liked her back and afraid that she was forcing her way into him by exploiting his moment of vulnerability after meeting the asshole (two reasonable doubts that even an adult could have in her circumstances). She is also surprised on how fast she fell for him considering she kinda gave up on romance altogether just before she met Saito (helped by her middle school trauma + family circumstances).

After Saito instant replied accepting her date invitation, however, she realized he liked her back so she pulled all the stops instantly (smart girl).
