Well, it's nothing surprising that they are defensive against westerners. There is enough reason in history why they should be, but that is not the reason to justify fucking people over. I was to China couple of times. One half of people wanted to take a picture with me just because I am somewhat handsome, fair hair, green eyes, masculine face. The other half (I am obviously exaggerating here) tried to turn my trip into a scamfest. Everything I said in previous post stems from my personal experiences, this does not mean that it applies to every one of them. This is not blind hatred, it is not even hatred, it is just the statement of the fact, that two times I was to China, people there, through their actions/attitude formed my opinion. I do understand that it is partly because of how I look (even though I am not American, I live and was born in Europe, moreover my parents are from USSR). On the topic of the people mistreating chinese on the internet, well it is a rare sight (at least for me) to meet polite chinese people over the internet. Maybe something with the difference in mentality or just my neverending bad luck. And don't start on online games, amount of cheaters and bug users is just awful, and then there is the ping issue. Have you tried to play pubg against someone from China? The real reasons behind this problem are just some differences, couple of misunderstandings and the fact that human race can be fucking biogarbage sometimes. On the patriotism, well in China, you are almost guaranteed to get your ass kicked, in the America it's closer to not.
