Remind me what was the point of the katana/shinai swapping? The author made a point not to give him a katana in the intro only to change his mind almost immediately with no consequence.

Basically, the Loli god couldn't give him any of the weapons she currently owns due to them being to OP. Talking WMD level here. So she gave him the only thing that was even slightly sane.
However even that was overkill as it was a wooden indestructible piece that could easily been seen as being abnormal as fuck. So instead she got his old weapon from his grave, placed a few enchants on it. And had it sent to him.

Thing is, she still went a little overboard on the enchants. Which is part of the joke.

Despite the katana being OP, it's still not as dangerous as the shinai which bordered on being a WMD and could even start doing things like destroying barriers between worlds. And when you start swinging around what appears to be a normal wood training sword and it cuts through steel, stone - people are going to realize immediately that it's some weapon of the gods. Whereas if you start doing that with a katana, you might be able to bullshit it away with "it's made by the finest weaponsmiths with ancient magic, yaddayadda" and perhaps they'll just think it's an awesome ancient magical sword... instead of a doomsday weapon forged by the gods..
