I hope that the story will eventually reveal that the Imperial Japanese Army were not exactly the good guys, either, and that they too wanted to colonize the world. Or something to not portray them as a force of justice. Otherwise, I think I'm going to enjoy this manga a lot less.

You forgot the gap in technology between WW2 and modern. It's huge. He may be able to withstood it back then, but not with newer and stronger equipment and ammo.

I did not say tanking the shell. By page 22, if he can react to it and has the time to put up the shield, he should just move out of the way. Or just react when the gun is aimed at him.

Wasn't the whole country last time, just some of the troops got the summoned by a Goddess treatment (may have been a fleet of ships), that's why the Elf countries that worship the Sun, have enshrined tanks and Zeroes from WW2.

Edit: from what I remember, they fought a war against the Sorcerous Empire, raided treasuries all over, and got treated like heroes by the surviving peoples, then got sent back to WW2 looking like they may have filled their ships with stolen gold from the Philippines or something.
