Well, I think it has to do with upbringing in Asia that you shouldn't display your feelings out in the open. There's always this "appropriate" distance between individuals, I feel. Correct me if I'm wrong, please.

I realize it's a big cultural difference but I never understood why that became a thing. I'm sure there are reasons for it, but it kinda feels like the the kind of thing where the ones who enforced that only did it because they never got to experience such things and couldn't stand to see other people's happiness.

Think it has more to do with buddhism education and "self-control". Where losing yourself to your pulsions and feelings is seen as bad or a weakness. Hence the accent on discipline, purification, etc. That you sometimes see in manga.

Hi, apologies for my bad/stiff English.

The idea of self-control mostly applies when you are in public or with someone you just met. If it's to your SO or spouse in private and you're used to each other, there is usually no embarrassment and self-control is less restricting.

I think the wife gets embarrassed in these situations because she has "no guard" so him being on the offensive is probably a critical hit every time. These are works of fiction to entertain the reader after all. If it was too realistic, it wouldn't be fun or fluffy enough to keep us reading. Although, in real life, some Asian wives do act embarrassed but it's mostly an act to pretend to be cute.
