Not to mention that I am pretty sure that the shitty AI ad was on for more than one day.

He did get banned once for data scraping, IIRC. He got nuked for the fake accusations of threatening a user whose account he was sock-puppeting (with their cooperation) and then using a couple other accounts (with the same name using substitute characters) to try and circumvent the ban.

I run Item Wizard and have some ad time. It's a site that helps people choose a keyboard. I've developed and maintained it as a solo project and have done everything including the logo but excluding the character illustration. The illustration is done by Graphomancy Studio based out of the UK.

While it's uncertain whether these ads will get a rerun or even breakeven, optimistically, I'm willing to run at breakeven and funnel earnings back to mangadex and commissioning art work.

I've been using mangadex since the great migration from batoto. Mangadex has shown great resiliency over the years and despite its imperfections I'd rather see it continue to operate than not.

Mangadex before had a pretty strong anti advertisement stance.
Like, that was one of the key big selling points to shit on Kissmanga for.
The Mangadex team should at least be honest if they use a monetization strategy they have been vocally opposed to in the past.
And particularly, if they claim that it's a temporary solution they would prefer to get rid of ASAP, as Bart states in the OP, I would think that rather than following a strategy that feels like "don't talk about it, the users will just forget it, and we can just let ads be forever on the site", they would treat this topic with a more active "we are this close" stance.

Honestly, do you guys notice how much of your arguments are copypasted from each other? Like, there are really obvious patterns that all this doomerism is pretty much regurgitated the entire time.

It was explained multiple times on why the new system was rolled out like this. The bug where no forum discussions can be created unless someone made a comment is an honest fuck-up that's expected to be fixed tomorrow.

My personal belief is that ads will be sticking around forever and a day.
I hate to remind everyone but MangaDex is owned and operated by Namicomi and NamiComi answers to investors.This is especially crucial to note after last year's publisher stomp-a-thon styling on MangaDex's ass twice which resulted in Namicomi being derisked by at least Pace Capital (NamiComi's largest investor) in their Q3.25, Q4.25 AND Q1.26 guidance. (I did not check Q2.26 guidance for obvious reasons)

This means they need to expand upon current revenue streams like ads and membership to placate investors... well what do you know, recently they have been seriously shopping around for adspace buyers, officially partnered with the credit card companies, and are rapidly expanding member-only privileges. Too bad they keep hiring clowns and acting like the users are as dumb as their new employees.

It was just a small joke. As for alternatives, like a donation campaign, users already whine a fuckton these days about the tiny "become a supporter" banner at the top of the page. Can you imagine the wailing we'd see if it was more obvious/prevalent? If I were staff, I'd also be hesitant to start any kind of support campaign.
