Oh crap... for how many years this predates busoushoku haki?
Jokes aside both nen and haki are the great combat systems we know today cause they have solid foundations in all kind of martial art tropes... and jetblacking body parts for emphasis shouldn't be that noveau of a concept anyway...
Probably a true One Piece fan can corrects me and prove that Luffy usage came first anyway(1)(2), Probably my minus is how accurate I am shooting my all jokes down... Although I would hate to think about the consequences of calling my minus Killer Gag...

(1) In my first reading Scott Pilgrim and Drakengard just went above my head, pretty sure that the chapter isn't this much older...
