Even though the slapstick joke (and similar comedy style) is also there in the anime, it's only in the levels of the earlier volumes, way more tolerable before it gets way too unbearable, like what we're seeing now.

Makes you grateful (and maybe also wonder why) that the anime ends with Kinue's marriage arc, and it doesn't adapt anything after that.

The thing about the anime is that it went into production in 1988, which is when the manga was still not leaning heavily on slapstick humor. The anime did have slapstick, but it's fairly mild. I'm not sure what the calculation was that the manga needed more of it, but there is a definite point where you notice it ramping up.

In hindsight, I think if people now ask me where to start with Oishinbo from either its manga or anime, I'll just say definitely the anime or the à la Carte editions.

Because even though the latter has chapters where the characters' Flanderization and the slapstick joke have settled permanently, you don't have to sit through dozens and dozens of chapters reading and watching people like Ohara, Noriko, and Kinue devolve in real-time from okay characters to people that actively give you severe migraine anytime they show up.

The sudden characterization changes in the à la Carte editions' chapters from between the earlier and later volumes can be jarring, but for me, better that than watching how the characters' Flanderization actively and progressively unfolds.

Speaking of the anime, Artstyle wise and characterization wise, it does feel that they rolled back Yamaoka's whole " Hes looked down upon " vibe. Maybe its a mix of the VA (It IS Kakashi afterall) and the artstyle making him taller, but he comes across more cool and relaxed. He also comes across less like a laissez faire type, for better or worse characterisation depending.

Likewise, the anime sort of locks in on Kaibara's more "leonine" regal look and characterization early. Its weird to look back at Early Kaibara, who was stockier, slightly balding and even walkd with a cane.

I think honstly my main issue with this love..triangle...decahedron....shape, is we already HAVE a rival each. Kurita has Futaki, Yamaoka has Kinjo. That was honestly enough. We did not need Dan.

I do remember that Kaibara does walk with a cane in his first anime episode appearance (incidentally, his VA Chikao Otsuka had one of the greatest laughs I've ever heard. Ranks right up there with The Million Dollar Man Ted DiBiase's).

I can only guess that Dan seemingly was added to give Yamaoka a rival that is unlikable. I mean, I could see a reader at the time going, "Kinjo is a cool dude, I hope Kurita picks him over Yamaoka"... Whereas Dan... I don't think anybody likes Dan.
