Those two ladies really need to shut the hell up. Yamaoka helped them both get married. They need to just mind their own business.

Edit: Actually, even worse in Hanamura-now-Mitani's case, Yamaoka literally saved her life when she can't eat anything during her pregnancy. If he hadn't stepped in to find food she can eat, even if she hadn't died she'd be so deteriorated she might never be able to work again. That on top of Yamaoka helping her find Mitani to begin with. And him helping Tabata-now-Arakawa to make good rice for her future mother-in-law. Even if they think Kurita deserves a better husband because Yamaoka is kind of a bum, them being this bitchy is irritating to me. I want to shake the author by the collar so bad.

Now this chapter is very interesting. I always like cooking chapter that discuss gamey meat since I'm not brave enough to try it in real life

I know I've mentioned this before, but my gf is Australian and has eaten kangaroo meat. She does not like it at all... Also, the thing about the deer farms was briefly perplexing to me because I live in Western Pennsylvania and if you want a goddamn deer, all you have to do is get in your car and drive for awhile and you'll probably hit one. Deer are everywhere here... Then, I remembered that prior to coming to Pittsburgh, my gf had never actually seen a deer before.

Interesting. Only other manga I have seen cover Australia is Drops of God (around chapter 217, they go to Australia to find a Australian wine for the competition) and there, they write the Australian side more from the point of view of ecofriendlies, but also with somewhat shaky relations to the Japanese. (whereas Oishinbo, the author pretty much only talks of them positively, which might also be bias cus he..lives there)

One of the folks they meet in Australia who leads said eco conservationist group says he doesnt like the Japanese (whilst in the same sentence saying he doesnt dislike them for xenophobic reasons) because most of Tasmianias forrests and their lumber is sold to Japan, Spain and Chile (Manga was first sold in 2004 so data might be required), so he fundamentally doesnt like Japans culture with woodwork and such, woodchips for smoking and so on. There is also emphasis on the fact that whilst Australia has magnificent wineries (the ecogroup Is fans of wine) alot of Australia IS borderline unliveable/ungrowable soil, so Kaibara tasting it both....accurate and a bit silly cus he would be in areas with good winery soil. But thats nitpoicing I suppose.

Interestingly, kind of similar dynamics with Yamaoka/Yuzan and Shizuku Kanzaki/Yutaka Kanzaki (Their respective counterparts, Funnily enough both fathers have Yu in their name) hut in the Kanzaki's case, less volatile (also different cus Yutaka is very dead and a wine critic as opposed to a potterer and culinary expert), so Shizuku's thing is more coming to terms and understandng his father (and his own love for wine he has tried to deny) than it is butting heads with him.

Sorry if I came off rambling, I just love both series and this is the first time Australia and Wine overlaps for both.

Scandinavian here, eats alot of game. If you were to wanna try it, berries (lingonberry, raspberry) work well with it, as a marinade or soak or a jam by the side. Game isnt something you wanna eat raw or untouched. Like, if anything, if its aged or worked with properly, its for the best. I mean, kind of the same for beef. You dont want to butcher a cow and then just jump into eating it, it'll taste weird and bloody, and not good bloody either. If game has been butchered correctly/and aged right, you skip 90% of the unpleasantries/work, the other 10% is cooking it correctly.

My favorite food is my grandma's moose stew, longcooked for hours. Also like mooseburgers.

At least Kanzaki trained Shizuku in a much more gentle way, so he had good memories with both mum and dad. He just seemed more like he got fed up of the winery and wanted to choose his own future. Kaibara is just a big asshole.

Also re: Australia, it's because bro is still in his rose-tinted glasses phase LMAO. Apparently later on he was met with less-than-friendly attitude from the locals, so in Oishinbo he made this chapter where it's like "Oh my GOD, Australia is so racist that Japanese people are literally in danger!!" Dude never fails to go extra about everything.

One thing I took note of as well, cross referencing with Drops of God (They both mention Barrossa Valley) is Yamaoka does NOT mention the wine/grape Australia makes the most out of (But Drops of God does mention it). Shiraz/Syrah. Burgundy styles are infact not that common in comparison, well, comparatively. I do wonder if perhaps Shiraz wasnt as forefronty around this time as it is now.

I wonder if it will pop up in the chapters to come.

Nah, I'm willing to bet a lot that he just literally didn't know and just said random stuff about the grape. Like, on the subject of Drops, remember the whole issue about how raw oysters only pair with certain kinds of Chablis? Oishinbo's author very clearly didn't know that, so he kept doubling down about how Chablis actually doesn't pair well with oysters and sake is better.

Bro probably paired the oyster with the wrong Chablis and it ended up tasting super gross.

Issat the one early one with the family restaurant? I think it was.
Yeah, Oishinbo's chapters on wine are funny when youve read Drops of God cus it is kind of a whole other beast when it comes to thoroughness on that topic.

I believe Drops of God even had good things to about Beaujolais Nouveau (i do recall minimum Beaujolais comes up) whereas Oishinbo went " Dumbass. Idiot. I cant believe you. Dont drink this. Its wine for immature babies " when there's art to making it and variety of opinions on it. That said, the " immature " thing IS a complaint that has been given to Nouveau, so that is fair to bring up as a opinion that existed at the time, just that it is still extremely subjective.

Also Yamaoka is correct that alot of factors makes or breaks good wine (Literal lil changes in weather can fuck up stuff). That said, Issei Tomine (Love your work, Wine Aizen) DOES also do that soil tasting thing, which I thought was interesting. (Although he does it as a game to guess the origin, less so the soil quality itself.)

It was LMAO. I had searched it myself, and it was true. I saw this wine website that says that while all Chablis are good for oysters, some are better suited only for cooked oysters and some will be good for the raw.
Like the manga were focused more on the raw, but Shizuku did briefly mention that his dad once had asked for the oysters be changed to a cooked oysters menu when he saw the Chablis was not right for the raw one.

Oishinbo's author just a rich snob himself, honestly. Like all the stuff he keeps harping on about pure food and stuff is just not feasible. Wanting everything to be natural and handcrafted without machine is just asking for food shortage or making the prices skyrocket. In a much later episode bro made Yamaoka go on a rant against Windows computers because he himself is a Mac purist (even though Macs are crazy expensive). Pretty sure in reality a minimum wage office worker bum like Yamaoka would never have the money to buy a Mac, what with how he tends to waste his cash all the time. Or, even if it wasn't Yamaoka it was someone else in the office, it wasn't Mr Rich Moneybags Dan who said it.

Ah yes, the Francois et Jean-Marie Raveneau.

He switches it to Oysters Meuniere. And the one that does fit the oysters is a Louis Jadot bottle, a village wine. The orignial village of Chablis used to be under the sea, so the calcic soil (and fossilized oyster shells in it) means those come out dry, which fits oysters. The Chablis's that are more inland (and aged in casks) have fruit tones that clash with it. So theyre both Chablis, but entirely different.

Funnily enough, I kind of dont drink wine much at all. I prefer ciders (Though if I have to drink one, I prefer crisp whites to reds.)

BUT
everything ABOUT wine and how its made, Oh, I love that stuff.

I do wonder if Oishinbo will cover Japanese wines, cus theres some golden nuggets to be found there, and I wanna see what the author thinks is one vs the general consensus irl now and at the time.

I'm sorry, what? He made Yamaoka, the food expert, go on a rant about Windows computers, in a FOOD manga?

Yeah. I haven't gotten there yet, but Kariya hated Windows for some reason and strongly prefers Apple. Well, serves him right, I'm doing this TL on a Windows laptop.

Yes. Double checked and it really was Yamaoka. I do concede that apparently Yamaoka was paying his computer in installments, I'd forgotten about that, but yeah.
Some guy was working on a Windows and Yamaoka just went apeshit at him, ranting about how the UI is trash or something like that, and we spend the whole chapter with Yamaoka using food to make the guy change his computer to a Mac.

Windows 95 is superior to whatever the fuck the uhmayzing Mac version displayed in the chapter. I was old enough to see them both in action, there is nothing about the Mac that was any better than the Windows, fuck you Kariya.

Yes, I know that. I do still remember the explanation for why, so you didn't have to re-explain to me LOL. I just didn't remember the name of the wine specifically in the series (the wine website I saw mentioned a few different names).

Me too! Win95 was my first computer and I still have so much nostalgia for that particular OS. I miss how it ran and the games on it. Emulators just don’t capture that same feeling of playing Oregon Trail 3 with full FMV and inserting three discs.
